Large Scale Central

I've been bitten

I think i have been bitten by the narrow gauge logging bug. it happened while I was on vacation in Oregon, and now its getting worse. It started with a book, now I am ready to go On30 logging. I know the big players, but a few additional links for structures and details would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to know what is available (and how much it will set me back) so i can plan accordingly.

Thanks,

George

You’re doomed now, George! On30 is infectous fun…welcome to the Dark Side

Doomed he says…NOT SO!!!

Wife gave me an On30 set of John Wayne stuff for birthday. She knows I’m a huge fan. Of course it was probably overpriced, but she loves me and got it anyway!

I have it displayed as its too nice to chance damaging and I am not at all interested in On30 to use. I have enough in large scale, more than enough actually!

Resist the temptation …do logging in large scale! NO!!!, On30 is NOT large scale!!!

George ,
You just jump in and enjoy it . I have On and it is damn good stuff , the buildings from American manufacturers are available over here and are a delight . House of Balsa springs to mind as a good starting point , they do enough to keep you going for a while . Narrow Guage and Short Line Gazette seems to be the best Magazine to get , have a look , it gets a lot of adverts in it .

Many of us have seen the light on the dark side…

For a comparision, I just purchased a box of track to use on my soon to be constructed layout with On30 using regular HO code 100 track and switches…

Found a place that had a box (100) pieces of 3 foot flex track, that’s 300 feet. Total cost including shipping, $140

Now to figure how to find a new home for the excess Shinohara code 100 switches. I started with 240 !! Sold a few on eBay…

Cheers,

There is no cure for this infection.

Come to think of it, haven’t heard of anyone even trying to find one.

Absolutely … go for it! Apparently more and more of us getting into LS outdoors and On30 indoors. It seems a logical solution to the problem of not being able to run trains for a considerable portion of the year (depending on how far north you live). And the cost of getting into On30 is very small when compared to LS outdoor stuff. Even a small switching layout can keep you very happy and fully occupied until the arrival of spring.

Since I started in On30 I’ve changed the purpose of my outdoor layout. I do “operations” indoors on the On30 line and concentrate my efforts outdoors on improving the gardening aspect of my layout. I now find it very rewarding and relaxing to just watch the trains slowly travel through the flowerbeds. My new, and much smaller, outdoor layout is designed to run around a secondary patio in the backyard. I’ll be adding some automation to add a little animation but the idea is to have this layout be “hands-free”.

If you see George at ECLSTS (he’ll be working at the Aristo booth, he’s a short, bald guy with a beard and glasses and a serious train nut) ask him if he ever pursued On30 in that past 3 years since this was posted.

If the prices and such keep goin up I may sell off the G-stuff and go the other way!! Although I do like the outdoor aspect of the G-scale!! Yikes Regal

Do what some folks do over here in Povertyville, Poor County - 0n30 in the backyard, and yes, you CAN do it. My BIL and I have had some Peco H0 NS track out in the backyard for over 30 years. Still good, too.

Terry, you just answered my question about using it outside. How do you think that track will look with Gn15? That’s a project in the planning stage.

Doug - the Peco 16.5 NG-style track will look just right with Gn15, especially if you get the nickel-silver stuff. That’s what folks over here are using…
