I know many of you deal with this white stuff on a regular basis, but we don’t do snow in the south. It makes southerners lose their mind. If anyone wants it, please come get it, no charge
1972, US Army, And I picked Ft.Rucker Al. ( Deep South down near the Florida Panhandle) as my next assignment. Having come out of Germany I was wanting a warmer base for the winters…
1st Weekend… we got 6 inches of snow… The state closed the roads, and forced everyone to stay home… I got pulled over by a state cop for driving… Ha 6 inches, just a light dusting… no issue driving…
He didn’t think it was funny…
Here in the great brown north of Idaho we can’t buy snow. One of the mildest winters i remember of not the mildest ever.
Only twice has snow lasted beyond the night this year
Ahhhh, quit your belly aching Dan that’s just a dusting.
Dan;
Roanoke, VA missed the snow this time, but not the severe cold. Lucky for us, the inch of ice on top of another inch of snow had melted pretty much before the next cold grip came.
Best, David Meashey
I love it when news casts show southerners trying to drive in 1" of snow.
It is hilarious!
Here is me trying clearing my driveway some years ago when we had snow.
The winters lately up here barely have enough to ski in the nearby mountains.
Nothing as dramatic as Dan’s, but here in Panama City Florida, 3.5 inches of snow is a big thing. Was 23° at 05:00 this morning and not supposed to get out of the 30s for the day. According to the Weather Channel, my girls over in Milton Florida set a record with 9.8 inches of snow.
Near Columbia MD, and our latest snow wasn’t much (~2") but it was sleety and turned to ice. Couldn’t throw or shovel it, so just drove over it and put salt down, so far so good. But yeah, single digits in the mornings.
My wife was supposed to fly to New Orleans this morning, but the flight was canceled. The soonest she could rebook is Friday! So I guess the airports down there are having a hard time as well.
Dave,
I go to SD every year hunting and I get that same remark when they have 6-8 inches … Its just a light dusting.
We ended up with about 3 inches but its mostly gone now. Spoke with a coworker in the Baton Rouge area this morning and he said they had about 8.5 inches on the ground.
That’s the problem, John. Southerners don’t drive in the snow … they wreck in the snow
Bob, it was 14 at 5:00 here. Now that’s not -7, but its cold for us rednecks.
Send some here, we need the water
Just in case you are contemplating an escape and want to head southerly, here’s todays weather report…
It’s currently is 23° and it’s going to be 32° by the end of the week. It’s been a pretty good summer so far… our hottest day so far in 2025 has been 36.9° (body temperature).
You had me going bill until I realized your temp were centigrade. At first your summer is only slight warmer than my winter. But that’s cuz mine is in that pesky F
We were recently commenting on the legacy of imperial measurements and the fact that newborns weights are still announced in pounds and ounces (but weighed in kg) and that the quarter pounder has retained its name in Oz.
I suspect that will disappear with our generation (baby weights not the 113 gram burger). We grew up with the two systems transitioning to metric.
For us on the other hand, some of our favourite recipes come from the USA, so we keep separate measuring cups and different sized tablespoons when we cook from our USA Cookbooks or get Alexa to convert the measurements.
I do miss horsepower and PSI.
How does Alexa convert PA dutch cooking. I hint of this, a dash of that, a tub of lard, wet bottom shoofly and scrapple ?
Well in the Great Southwest, New Mexico it was -2 this morning…
OK truth… I’m only 40 miles from the Southern Rockies in Colorado and I’m at 6000ft.
And my new unfinished shop i’m building is unheated… Burrrrrrrr
Most winters, the snow in my yard should be knee to waist deep by this time with temps stuck in the twenties.
Currently, the snow is barely ankle-deep in places and nonexistent in others. Temps are in the mid-thirties - with occasional rain. A week ago, the forecast was for a blizzard this weekend. Now we are looking at a winter monsoon.
I suspect that rain will move to the Lower 48 and turn to snow in the next week or so.
For many years i lived in Carson City, Nevada. In 1986 the snow came to the Sierras and buried nearly to the top of the telephone poles. Those poles are 40 feet high and you could walk up and touch the wires. Mt Rose Highway was tunneled as the snow was too deep to plow. I do not remember how cold it was, but it was very cold!
Later, about 3 years ago, I lived in Gunnison Colorado. The temps on some days got down to -40 degrees. My wife and I got some hot water out of the sink (suggested by a friend) and went outside and tossed the water up in the cold air. It would freeze before it hit the ground!!!
So, I know cold weather real well. Now days, living in Missouri, It is cold enough for me at 30 degrees. I am a wimp now. Age…such a hard thing sometime.
I think many of us grew up in different “climates”
Jean and I were married on June 10, 1973…As I recall it was summer there, although winter WAS cold in New York…
We bought “souvenir” sweat shirts in Montana to keep warm…and on June 21, 1973 we visited Glacier park where it had SNOWED the day before…
Fortunately the roads were open, but the amount of snow blew my mind…
