It had to happen sooner or later. Our house was built in 1955 and still had the original cedar shakes covered by two layers of asphalt shingles. Last Saturday a roofing crew stripped off all of this junk (some of the cedar had rotted under the shingles), covered the original lath boards with plywood and installed a water barrier and a fresh layer of 50 year shingles.
I spent most of Sunday on my knees in the garden picking up splinters of cedar, asphalt chips and roofing nails. Even though they tarped the track and most of the gardens, a lot of junk got through and/or spilled when the picked up the tarps. They raked, hand picked and used an big magnet on wheels to find nails before they left, but I think I’ll be finding evidence of this job in the gardens and grass for the next 20 years
At least I’ll never have to do this again in my lifetime.
Monday they replaced about 60 foot of rotting fascia boards before the new gutters go on next week. When I got home from work I found another sprinkling of nails in the driveway from that job. Good thing I have road hazard guarantee on my tires.
My 3 yr. old niece and I did successfully run a train late Sunday afternoon. We didn’t find any nails on the track
