It's a caboose!

I caught a caboose out on the rails Saturday. They’re pretty rare, even on the MOW trains.
The rail cars are pretty interesting too. I was told the rail sections are 1/4 mile long.
Watch it in HD and full screen if you can.

I shot 18 videos. This is another of the more interesting ones.
As one train pulls through one leg of the wye, they’re backing a train through another leg.

Nice Ralph. That new video camera takes some nice shots, very clear. I like it.

Ain’t it amazing that the rail bends and follows the curvature of the track.
Try that on our layouts!

I was thinking the same thing. You would think there would be a lot of forces on those cars trying to derail them in the curves, but apparently the rail is more flexible than we think.

Shawn,
I’m pretty happy with the camcorder.
I am finding it is very difficult to do two things at once. Trying to take pictures and shoot video at the same time is causing some quality issues.

Here’s another video. The beautiful Hamlet depot makes a couple of brief appearances.
In this video you can still see a fairly rare holdover from the heyday of passenger service. The “wells” used to fill the coaches with water.

A much better view of the depot in this video. We expected this train to turn on the wye into the yard.
Instead it went straight past the depot, and backed into the wye later.

I love the sound of the wheels going through the diamond. If you listen close you can hear every wheel individually. Next time you are there try focusing your view on the diamond.

Jon,
I enjoy the sound also
Had I known it was going to cross the diamond, I would have had the camcorder focused there.
My el-cheapo tripod doesn’t pan too smoothly, so I usually fix to one location. Since this train didn’t take the route we were expecting, I had to scramble to make the adjustment.

We saw a lot of trains in Hamlet, NC. last Saturday. So, the videos just keep coming.
There was an interesting boxcar on this train from the “New Orleans Public Belt Railroad”.
I’ve never heard of it and will look it up today and see if it’s still operational.
