Large Scale Central

IT LIVES the STAINZ is REAL!

Just got back from Maine and taking a ride on the Eastern Maine train from Brunswick to Rockland, a nice trip by the way, when after picking up some brochures we found some local train spots to visit on the way home and guess what I found in BoothBay?? I didn’t know they were real BUT Everyones favorite little starter set engine that could… The LGB STAINZ

Pretty neat HUH

There’s a prototype for everything!

That would be good kitbash material, too!

Great Picture Todd, think that would look even better in your back yard

Cool little loco!

I was under the impression it was based on the one LGB owned?

I don’t believe Lehmann ever owned the “Stainz”

from WIKI and the item that LGB produced was an “artists impression” i.e. they adjusted and “corrected” until it had the “correct” look. And right from the very start they fudged on the scale/gauge question i.e. if the Stainz is 1:22.5 it should be running on 34mm track. But c’est la vie and the rest followed in a similar fashion.  BTW I never bought a Stainz, I didn’t buy a starter set either. :stuck_out_tongue:

But they did have a meter gauge engine on the property that does have some resemblance to the Boothbay engine. Wonder what happened to the rolling stock that was at the Lehmann factory. Hopefully it found a new home. Speaking of the Stainz, does anybody have or know of a good DVD that features the line it runs on and has coverage of the real Stainz running?

Hi Mike,

Similarities, yes.

http://www.lasergang.de/Lokomotive-FRANZBURG.htm

The train that used to be as a historical display at LGB (Saganer Strasse) came from the “Franzburger Kreiskleinbahnen” and yes, that was Meter Gauge… A long way from where the Stainz resides.
LGB planned to bring a model of the complete train, but …

Which complete train Hans, the one at Saganer Strasse or from the Stainz line? Yes, that engine is from a long ways from where the Stainz comes from. Seems even though the builders are not connected, the engines do have some family resemblence to each other. I really wish someone had done a proper Murtalbahn bahnoff. One would have thought with the numbers of U series and Stainz out there, there would be comprehenisve lineup of structures, details ect to model that line beyond what LGB has done in rolling stock/locomotives. Cant even find anything more than a couple of short video clips of the real Stainz running on youtube or anywhere else. One would have thought one of the hobbiest that rented some cab time would have had family shooting video, or even a cab ride video. Mike

The two locomotives there in Boothbay were built by Henschel & Son in Germany. I don’t think they’re the ones LGB based their design off of. Is “Stainz” the name of #2 up a few posts there or is that the name of that particular class of engine or company?

Complete Franzburg train. Yeeees, those structures are a rarity in 1:22.5 and when there are some they get re-interpreted to make them look cuter. Have a look at this, though. http://www.kohn.at/arch_mariapfarr.php One could kitbash that from this

PIKO 62029 Blue Creek Valley Station Look at the rest of the stations on that site and you will go “Hmmmmm one could use …”. Probably won’t be exactly to scale, but it is amazing what one can conjure up with a bit of kitbashing. Same goes for a lot of the other structures Check them out and then browse through the POLA and PIKO line-up looking for the similarities.

No2 was christened " Stainz", there was a second engine on the Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn called “Meran”(No1) of the same type. Four more of the same type were used on the Steiermärkischen Landesbahnen.
