Large Scale Central

Is there any difference?

Is the Bachmann Big Hauler

the same scale as the Bachmann Spectrum mogul?

Are they both suppose to be narrow gauge?

Tim,

The Big Hauler was originally produced before 1:20.3 became a scale. It was done to 1:22.5 proportion like the LGB narrow gauge offerings at the time. While both the Big Hauler and the Spectrum Mogul have 3 foot gauge prototypes the models are to different scales. The prototype, ET&WNC, was fairly large for a narrow gauge engine and the mogul a fairly small one. Thus they look quite good together and Baldwin and other builders made engines in many sizes over the years. Unless you’re modeling a very specific prototype there’s no reason to worry about the disparity in the scales.

Ok! Thanks

Tim,

Dunno if this helps fix the difference in your mind … but take a look at:

http://narrowmind.railfan.net/WPYR/early-steam/2_52_(2).JPG (Sorry about the link; you’ll have to cut/paste)

Which is very similar to the 2-6-0, and

http://cass.etsu.edu/archives/ARCHIVES/Hardwoods/APA-801.htm

Which is the prototype for the Big Hauler…

While the difference in scale makes the models very similar in size, the 4-6-0 was a lot bigger and heavier in the real world than the 2-6-0, though both were 3’ gauge locomotives… take a look at the relative size of the loco to the people on and about her in each picture, and you can see how big they would be, relatively.

Bruce built a 4-6-0 into a 1:20.3 model with a bigger boiler, cab, and tender, but using the same running gear as the Big Hauler … and got a really nice monster of a locomotive … if you check the thread, you’ll see the before and after photos that give you an idea of the difference in size (though I think his “after” is actually a lot heavier locomotive in 1:20.3 than the original was in 1:22.5)

Not sure … is that the question you’re asking?

Thanks Matthew. Here are you images:

Yes, thanks, that was the question I was asking. Can you point me to the thread you are referring to?

Thanks, Tim …

Timmy ,
Good question , it certainly brought out some interesting stuff , didn’t it ? It’s given me a few ideas as
well . I wonder if there’s any more to come ?

Ah, a topic close to my heart! I do like the larger size of the 1:20. I would not mind if Bachmann made a true 1:20 10 wheeler!

So… this is way cool! Sorry to say, for some reason I had always that that prototypically the Spectrum Mogul 2-6-0 and the Big Hauler were suppose to be close to the same size. With the real life difference in size and the difference in actual scale size, running them side by side then really is not an issue as they really fit well together.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!
