installing battery and receiver in a Bachmann heisler

I need directions on how to disassemble a Bachmann heisler to install a battery, speaker and receiver.

I don’t have one, but George Schreyer’s (sp?) page has a good write-up: http://www.girr.org/girr/tips/tips9/heisler_tips.html

Thank you Jon, I checked the article. It is a good page with a lot of knowledge about the heisler but not what I need. It shows installing a receiver for DCC operation. I am dead rail so I want to gut the board in the heisler and install my own with battery and receiver.

OK. Thought you were looking for dis-assembly instructions. George usually covers that in pretty good detail and he also provides a wiring diagram. What are your questions?

There are several installs on YouTube for battery and power systems in Bachmann engines. Here is one on a Climax, not a Heisler, but pretty much the same engine as far as design. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNSDHKrcTNY I see on this model that the battery is carried in an extra car and not on the engine its self, I would see if there is not somewhere where a battery could be installed in the engine, if possible. YouTube has several battery installs, so spend a little time there and check out the many installs, one should be what you would look at doing. I personally use the Rail Pro system and do away with all the Bachmann electronics, Rail Pro modules have, engine power, lights, and sound, all in one board.

Success. After reviewing YouTube video’s I gutted the wiring and electronics and installed the RailPro. My only issue are the headlight and reverse headlight will not light. I don’t know if I burnt them out. If I did where can I find replacements? Jim

Did you use the existing lights or replace them with LED’s? The RailPro board will only supply 5 volts for lighting. Also, I found out the hard way that the transmitter will not enable automatic switching of lights when the steam outline lights are shown on the screen, you have to use the diesel outline lite symbols. Don’t ask me why.

I use 12v LED’s just about everywhere where lighting is needed on a locomotive. I do use the 5V Rail Pro lighting terminals to power them, you will be suspired on how much a 12V LED will light up on 5 Volts. trainman

Where do I purchase them? Jim

Jim, I will correct myself here, I have been using 9v LED’s and not 12V LED’s, but 12V can be used. Go with the 9v LED’S you will be much happier with the light performance. Here is the eBay site I have used in the past, https://www.ebay.com/itm/20-x-Pre-wired-9v-3mm-Warm-Soft-White-LEDs-Prewired-9-volt-DC-LED-Light-8v-7v/161606954180?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200520130830%26meid%3Dd0b0774b8cfb4d75a73f8f2a7e3e6fb4%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D151052047853%26itm%3D161606954180%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWebWithBBEV2bDemotion&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851

Do note here, if you have not used LED’s before, here are few things you need to know, 1. LED’s come in different sizes as well as different voltages, I mostly use the 3mm and 5mm in the 9v LED’s for just about every light on my engines when using the Rail Pro module and the 5v power outlets for lights, 2. LED’s come in different colors of white, these Cool White should work well for all lights in your engine, that’s what I use, 3. LED’s are directional to light up, so if you hook them up backward and nothing happen just reverse the power, you will not harm anything, 4. LED’s can also be dimmed for less light by using resistors, but let’s don’t get into that right now, 5. Try the light listed above and make sure you are getting them from a U.S. seller, there price is only a few more, if it says shipped from China you will be lucky to get them in a month or so, if you get them at all. These are the 5mm ones for headlights, bigger lights, https://www.ebay.com/itm/151274011817?hash=item2338a23ca9:g:HCQAAOSwNmVadY6H I’ve order from this guy and never had a problem, 5-8 days delivery time, your only paving about ,60 cents per light.

Jim,

You can get the 5V LED’s from Robbie at RLD, see here https://www.rldhobbies.com/ Call Robbie he has the correct size, color and voltage for your steam conversion.

Or you can contact Evans Design, here again you can call and talk about what your trying to do and what you need, see here https://evandesigns.com/

Thank you John and Rick for the information. I ordered from Evan Designs and should be here by Wednesday. Jim
