Installing a Aristo Revolution in a 55 ton shay, Requesting help

Hi,

I have a Bachmann 55 ton shay and the New Aristo system to put in it, but am having some trouble figuring out the wiring to hook it up. After some research I found most remove the stock board from bachmann and rewire the engine. Is this necessary? Can i wire in the Revolution with the existing board still there? Any advice would be appreciated as i am electronically challenged!

Thanks,
Aaron

Aaron,
Are you going to use track or battery power?

When I’m wiring for battery power, I remove all “stock” wiring and boards, wiring direct to the motor.
To my way of thinking, the stock board is just something that could fail and cause problems down the road.
If it isn’t necessary, I remove it.

Hi Ralph,

I am going to battery power. is there a way to wire in the flickering firebox and headlights if i remove the board?

Aaron,
Headlights are no problem without the board.
I couldn’t tell you about the flickering firebox.
The only engine I have with the flickering firebox hasn’t been converted.

The guy I spoke with at the train show today said that the Aristo board just plugs right into Bachmann locos. Wouldn’t know, but this would be another misleading statement if it’s not true.

The Aristo board plugs into the Bachmann locos that have “the socket” in them, which does not include the Shay. Having said that, here’s a link to the wiring diagram for the 3-truck Shay (look on the last few pages):

All the pertinent wires for the motor, lights, firebox, etc. come into the main PC board which is located under the bunker. Use the wiring diagram to trace find the wires you need, then cut them from the stock PC board and wire them to the electronics you’re installing in its place. You’ll end up pretty much gutting the stock board in the process, but that’s okay.

How do I hook up the three motors to the board, it looks like it is designed for one? Do I wire them all together?
