Insight from Tony Walsham's Bachmann 2-6-6-2 Review of May 17

I spoke to TWO different service reps, and if you want names, I’ll post them.
Both said matter-of-factly $50.00 or nothing!

They were monotone, un-friendly, and rather gruff with me.
And I was not antagonistic with them.

And even at $20.00 it’s still robbery!
If it were an LGB, your old employer, Mr Lynch, I would have had a gear with a nice friendly greeting as well, for free.

As to calling the 800 number.
No one will answer, just a machine.
No one will return your calls.
I finally got a number for a live person from theBach Man (I can post it here),
AFTER 2 months of trying to get my faulty counter weights exchanged on my K27.

You have a long way to go to smooth things up, My Lynch. And a big task at hand.

The Squeaky Wheel syndrome doesn’t work for me, I guess.

Rod posts one time about it and gets the part.

I posted and posted on Bachmann and here.

The toll free number for the service department is (800) 356-3910. They are available from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

If anyone feels they have not received courteous service please feel free to call me during business hours and I will be happy to address the situation with our service department.

David H,
Mr. Lynch has now given you an avenue to voice your concerns personaly.
I would take him up on his hospitality and let him know of your experience.
I hope everyone with an unsatisfactory service experience takes the time to call.
Ralph

I will try again. Possibly My Lynch had a customer service seminar in house and I will get a different response than I got the first time. (I did give up after only one attempt. My Bad!)

Mr. Lynch has just renewed at least most of my faith in Bachmann’s service department–THANK YOU!

The Connie’s gear was a bad design from the get-go.
Such a tiny, plastic gear for such a nice big and heavy loco.
It should have been re-called in the first place.

I have nothing else against the Connie.
That gear is it’s weakest link.

I'm sure everyone would like a number that will get them a "live" person ;) Ralph

Thank you Jack. You have new mail.

Rod,

I responded and it bounced back. I resent the message. Post here and let me know if you receive it.

Thanks

Still no go- can you confirm your email address? All I really need is a shipping address.

That’s why NWSL makes a machined replacement.
I still have some.

I won’t say that “all” have the problem, but I will say “every one” of the 2-8-0’s I have opened have a crack at the hub on the axle gear on the 2-8-0’s.
Lynch says this is getting out of hand?
You think?

It has BEEN out of hand for a LONG time.

$50 quote is probably something Service came up with on their own.

You think that hasn’t happened before?

You think Service is going to actually TELL you they quoted $50 for a $20 part?

You own stock in the Brooklyn Bridge?

No problemo:

(215) 533-1600 gets you right into the front desk.

OK, I received my 2-6-6-2 T (Ridge Rord Station) Wed by UPS. Unpacked it and lubs it up good and ran it on the indoor trackage with poer and detected no problem, however that is not a long run or alot of time on the unit. We shall see how it does with more running. No, I have noteed need for tightening any screws so far. Maybe I am lucky (for once).

TOC-
Is the NWSL replacement EZ to install vs. Bachmann’s original which likely is a friction/slide-on.
Secondly, is there any problem with the gear, being metal (machiined suggests same), with durability interfacing with the other gear – hopefully not plastic.

Wendell,

A metal gear is the cheapest answer at this point. However it violates one of the cardinal rules “the driving gear should be harder (material) than the driven gear”.

The metal gear is the cheapest answer, but continued overloading of the loco will back the problems up the gear train.

After what Bachmann did to me and my shay I will not buy any thing from Bachmann again. It is setting in a glassed in case and will not run!

Hey TOC,
Could you supply the NWSL part # for that gear?
Been to the NWSL web-site’s parts list and they only refer to a replacemnet gear for the Shay.
Thanks

Do we have any ME’s on this forum who can assess the problem? Isn’t there some sort of preemptive action we could take BEFORE the gear splits and spins off the axle? Seems to me that at least part of the problem is that the hub is being over stressed when it’s being pushed onto the axle. That comment about monofilament line and epoxy might have some merit.
