Incline Railroad

I was at the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum last Friday, and thought this was a neat (G-gauge) display related to the Yosemite Valley RR’s huge incline.

They were playing a video of the real thing, and I found it on YouTube. It kinda amazed me!

If you feel like posting about your favorite incline, feel free to do so here.

I built one on my HO layout that worked with kadees and hauling a small lionel log car, which I could dump in my switchyard… lots of fun. It was only straight, though, the Yosemite one was very cool. My inspiration was an article in MR.

Greg

That is pretty cool.

Will one of my favorites be ok?

One of mine too!

There’s a small turn table to add the ore car to the train.

Arizona has a few hills too.

I especially love that first pic John. So… how do I say it… dangerous? winging it? non-OSHA? not-quite-engineered? someone’s-gonna-die-here-this-month?

Perfect for a model railroad!!!

9 times out of 10, it seems, there’s a prototype for anything(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

bonus;

Above is a better view over the bin.

That’s insane

So Cliff have you started the build yet ?

He has probably already started to sketch up the laser cut components

He’s gotta find a napkin first, though. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Cliff just add a hundred feet or so to one of your mountains and you’re good to go!

The wiggling is to duplicate the stereo viewer …

You’re giving me a headache! (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

After 5 minutes I wrote;

Make it stop!

But I couldn’t deny my friends…

it needs to be far less motion

There you go…

Very cool John. Gave me a headache too, but nice. I tried to “interpret” the stereo image through an online view, but didn’t do much better. All very fun though.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Sean, David, Steve, thanks for the vote of confidence, but no, I won’t be heading that direction, haha! But, if I were, I’d have to get to the 4th theoretical / mythical level of my layout, which would allow for the Eureka Funicular… And I’ll be pushing up bent daisies long before that happens. John Caughey,

Are there any trace of the Arizona inclines still around? I’ve been looking on Google Earth around Clifton and cannot find any identifying features. Has the huge Morenci Copper Mine swallowed up much of the area where the Shannon Copper incline was located? I was able to find the trace of the Yosemite Lumber Incline see accompanying photo.

Dan,

I don’t know, Google has been my guide.

I imagine from our summer rains … Monsoons, traces may have washed away. I wouldn’t be surprised if the mine did eat them up, it ate the town.

The Longfellow incline lived up to it’s name 2,200 feet. As best as I can figure the picture I posted with the electrical locos was the very top and the pic Cliff marked as insane just shows the climb from ground level. I surmise there was a saddle between the 2 peaks and the electrics were needed to transverse the less steep bits.

Have fun with your searches.
