In the Market for Lettering?

I am in the market for lettering to apply to my passenger cars and a few other things.

So besides G scale graphics who else does custom lettering for our trains? I am curious about how the lettering is made, is it vinyl or a decal transfer?

How does it arrive? If I wanted 4 sets of lettering does it come on a sheet that I trim?

And above all what are we talking for prices?

Thanks guys.

Todd

Give Stan a shout ! You will not be disappointed!

Thanks Sean, I knew there was someone here on this forum that did decals but I couldn’t remember his name. I will have to send Stan an inquiry.

I love Stan’s stuff. They are high quality water slide and Stan will work closely with you to get exactly what you want. You give him an idea and he will design it. Can’t say enough good.

He did both my 2-6-0 project ones and the sign I used for the MIK challenge if you want to look at them.

If Stan would be willing to help me do a custom Harley Davidson wood-sided caboose to match my LGB Harley reefer and tank car, he has my business!

I bet he would if he can. Since he is a business and is selling stuff he may run into copyright issues. But I would ask him.

Stan produced a sheet of Pennsy decals for my std gauge boxcar. Great job, very professional.

Yeah, see, that’s what I’m up against. But I’ve seen a very nicely done Harley caboose before, customized by a Southern California club member (who is now deceased). So if someone would come forward and volunteer their services, I would not tell a soul who did the work! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

That cat is out of the bag … already!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

When I say “come forward to volunteer their services”, I of course would recommend that they’d contact me using the private message function, John. And with me, the cat would never get outta the bag. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

The copyright issue would be something that would deter a professional. So a gifted amateur might be interested in helping you, but its a touchy situation.

No, I am not a gifted amateur.

Copyright is a touchy subject that can land one in hot water if a perceived violation is pursued. I wouldn’t think a one off copy of someones logo created for personal use would get too many people upset but if that logo was mass produced and sold for profit that is a different story.

If Stan was making me a copy of the Cape Cod Centrals lettering in their colours and font and selling his work to me would that be a violation?

I wouldn’t think so but then again?

In the case of the Harley caboose who could stop someone who painted one in the HD colours then slapped an officially licensed bumper sticker on the side of it?

That’s a good point. In fact, the decals I have in mind to go on each side of the caboose are commercially available off the shelf through various Harley dealers and online. I don’t see a problem with painting a caboose black with orange horizontal stripes and an HD logo decal applied to each side. The Harley caboose that I mentioned above (sold on Ebay) was previously customized by a Del Oro club member and run on their public layout for quite awhile. I assume nobody told him he was violating any copyright laws.

On a side note (don’t want to derail the thread) but I am a little curious to know how much LGB paid in copyright fees to Harley Davidson for their trademark usage on their reefer and tank cars. And their beer cars for that matter. I assume it would be a piece by piece charge and would vary depending on the company.

Sorry but I imagine a google search might show you stuffing the cat back in…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

It’s that old saying; ‘once on the net …’

We love to speculate here. Call Stan, he’s a very nice man. I’ve talked with him on the phone, never got bit!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I did the same thing when I wanted a Cape Cod Beer boxcar. When I visited their brewery to get a growler filled I picked up a couple of bumper stickers with their logo on it and slapped them on. I even sent them a photo of it and so far I haven’t received a phone call from their attorney.

I don’t think you would have a problem with a one off HD caboose for your own use, just don’t go mass producing them and selling them.

I contacted Stan and he got back to me even though he was away. I need to send him a photo or 2 of what I’m trying to do but he sent a couple of quick samples for me to check out and they are close to what I’m looking for.

Ah, so you’re Todd Haskins, a.k.a. “Cape Cod Todd”! I assume you have the “Kennedy accent” too? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Todd, do you have a USA Trains “Cape Cod Popcorn” and “Cape Cod Potato Chips” to go with your “Cape Cod Beer” car?

After the Harley caboose, I was thinking about a Bear Whiz caboose to go with my Bear Whiz reefers. So much time, not enough $…

Yes, if you make it yourself, then they probably would not have an issue with it. But if I make it for you, and sell it to you, now that crosses a line. I made it for “commercial gain”, even though I made one for you and I do not plan on making it again.

Now, the cost for Harley to come after someone for making one set of decals, its probably not worth it for them to even care. But, a person I used to know, was detained in Disneyland for her jacket. She programmed her home embroidering machine to embroider a Disney character on her jacket, and it was not licensed by Disney. No, Disney did not prosecute, but she did get a good talking to about her “artwork”.

In reality no one will care about a one off decal for a model railroad. Private or commercial. But if your the commercial enterprise you can not afford to risk it in my opinion. Others may not care. But someone making them for someone else for a few bucks to cover cost of materials and some beer money, they won’t notice or care even if they did.

Disney is one of the most Knocked off brands around , and have gone to GREAT lengths to stop anyone from doing so. Harley I am not sure , since there are so many logos already out there that are almost exact duplicates, I would bet they would not have any problem withit as long as it is something not mass produced. I think that is where the line is drawn, once you start selling lots of the same thing, they get cranky… except Disney, they are over the top.
