In-ko-pah RR -- Spring in the desert

I needed a break from working on my drugstore model, so lately I’ve been doing some stuff outdoors on the layout. I’m “fine-tuning” some of the rock work on older areas of the layout, and also creating and installing hundreds of miniature, scale plants. And, I’m working on improving my photography, trying out different camera angles, lighting, etc. Here are a few of my recent photos: This first shot is one of my favorites… A train crosses the Serenity Canyon Viaduct, as the setting sun casts long shadows on the ruins of an old mine:

The fireman of this locomotive takes a moment to enjoy the view as the late afternoon sun highlights the rocks and plants:

A bird’s eye view as a train traverses the cliffs of the In-ko-pah Railroad:

A view of the abandoned Monolith Mine, as seen from a train on the Serenity Canyon Viaduct. Note the red-tail hawk on the headframe:

Another view of the train on the Serenity Canyon Viaduct:

Scraggly ocotillos, prickly cholla cactus, brittlebush, and other desert shrubs dot this rocky ridge as a train passes in the distance:

The train struggles upgrade in the shadow of the cliffs:

Great pictures, Ray. I especially like this one. Much like the real world, the train is overshadowed by the surrounding landscape. Ralph

Wow great pictures. I love the rock work and the old mine area.

Thanks Ray, I was looking for your site to get some inspiration for building a road on a terraced landscape.

Wonderful Pictures of a beautiful railroad… Thanks…

Really nice work. Your attention to detail is fantastic and that goes for the photography and plants.
I love your plantwork. Maybe I can model some! That’s one thing. On the desert we can’t get much to grow without tons of expensive water.

Beautiful! I never cease to be amazed at how you can set individual rocks to create a very believable mountain scene.

Beautiful work of the highest quality , WOW !

Beautiful, just beautiful

Excellent!

Lovely photos!

Very nice!
What are those cute little things planted in?

On my rocky layout, I left some little trees in their pots and buried the pots in the rocks.
Second year and so far-so good.

They're all artificial, glued down to the mortar and rocks with Liquid Nails.

I’ve put together some pics and info about how I make some of the plants on my layout:

Holy Cow, I really did think they were real. I wondered how long they would last. I guess longer than I thought.

You sure fooled me. I thot they were real cacti!

you should be ashamed, to show us all thes perfect things, that nobody can copy!

first the bottles, now these plants…

i copied some of your plant-building fotos, for guiding, when i will try my luck with plants.

you are very high on my personal list of good modellers.

Thanks!
