In-ko-pah Railroad pics!

I’ve finally posted some new pics of my railroad, beginning with this one:

The first two pics were taken sometime around the end of June, after I’d finished building the small hillside trestle on the upper level of the east end. The second pic looks west towards the new, partially completed mountain in the middle of the layout. There are two tunnels running through this mountain, accessable via a pair of removable slabs over the center of the tunnels.

The rest of the pics are mostly closeup scenes from some of the (more or less) completed areas. I shot a bunch of these kinds of pics to enter in Garden Railways magazine’s annual photo contest. I selected the three best pics and mailed them in to the magazine. Those three are not online. The pics I posted online are the ones that didn’t make the cut, but they’re still pretty good.

I’ve finished the long plate girder viaduct, and you can see part of it in some of the pics. It’s about eight feet long, half of it straight and half curved. It’s supported by cast concrete pillars.

BTW, when I shot these pics, it was the first time I’ve ever had a train on the upper level of track, and the first time I ever had one running. The longest continuous stretch of track so far is only about 20 feet, so I could only run a short train back and forth. But it sure was cool!!

The last photo was taken at Balboa Park, and shows the “riding” train that’s in front of the San Diego Zoo. It runs on 15" gauge track.

That’s some serious rock work!! Looks good!

BTW, where in SD are you? I have a brother in Santee that I try to get out to see every spring( before it gets too hot). And I always make it a point to visit Balboa Park when I’m there. What a beautiful place! I find it very ironic that the planes landing at the airport pass right over the Air & Space museum there…

Thanks! I’m in the University City area, which is just west of the Miramar air base. Next time you’re going to be out here, let me know if you’d like to come see the layout.

I’ll definitely do that. Of course a lot of it depends on the airfare prices, but I’ve managed to get some pretty decent fares by waiting for specials.

Awww, it’s not that hot in Santee! If it gets bad, come over my place and visit, about 20 minutes from Univ. city, just off 5 in Carlsbad. I’ll supply the cigars. The layout isn’t huge, but the mallet can make it around!

Well according to my sister-in-law they had some humidity for several weeks which is unheard of out there. I usually try to get out there in late May and try to catch some railfan spots while I’m there. I’ll keep you in mind when I get out there again. Thanx for the invite…

Yes, high humidity for us, and almost 90 degrees! We are 1.5 miles from the water, so we have it a lot better than people just 5 more miles inland. San Diego is a weird climate, the temperature varies quite a bit with just a few mile difference from the ocean.

Regards, Greg

Ahh you guys missed the real heat wave up here 2 weeks ago, 110 in the shade in Pasadena, it was 118 at my sis-in-laws in Rancho Cookiemonster, this was near the end of almost 4 weeks straight of 100+ temps combined with high humidity. Last time I felt weather like that was the week we spent in Cancun Mexico, and that last weekend of the heat wave was as bad as the trip to Chichen Itza in the middle of the jungle down there.

So we finally got a break in the weather, down into the 90s, it felt soooooooo much better, now down into the 80’s and staying overcast some days. Its such a tremendous difference now, we can actually work outdoors without having an EMT truck waiting nearby!

Ray,

Great Photos-thanks for sharing!

What Great Rock work you have there-could you supply us with a wider shot?

It all looks Amazing…well; IT ROCKS!
