Improving the operation of the Bachmann K-27

Ah, right. slightly OT, but concerning the matter of bells, whistles et al. My present railway in the backyard, herafter referred as the round thing [TRT] has been in place since 2002, when my hearing was somewaht better. At that ime we had kids living all around us - this is yUK, and people really CAN live all around you.

From that time in September 2002, until today, not a single person has ever made any kind of a complaint, nor has a single person EVER knocked on my door and asked to see the trains that they can see from their bedroom window from three sides - we live on a corner, BTW.

Kids around here are just not interested in trains, just in exercising their thumbs with these ridiculous little toys they all seem to have.

Apologies for dread thrift.

Yes tac , and I know what the abbreviation stands for but hesitate to prove it by repeating it here . It came up briefly some time back when a chappie up Derby way got a bit uptight . I bet you don’t remember .

Stan,

PING…how about an update on the progress on this project??

I am getting ready to do some major surgery to my K and would be interested in your results before I start.

I have worked on 5 to date.

I have tried spacers from 2mm to a little over 3 mm. The 3 mm ones tend to lower the front end to much with the resut that the plow can hit items that are just above rail height.

I think I will standardize on 2 to 2.5 mm spacers.

I have replaced the pickup springs with a little better stainless steel ones on several of the locomotives. You would have to enlarge the hole that holds the springs to get a much stronger one in there.

I have also standardized on removing the side play for the 2nd and 4th drivers.

Hope that helps.

Stan

PS if you have a very early K27 then be sure to add a little additional weight on the front end.

Well, I now know the diameter of the springs, and more. Yesterday I tore into my K for most of the upgrades I wanted to do. Without duplicating a bunch of info the axle locking is documented here, but for those following here, the link takes you there : http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/22079/major-k27-overhaul

I have been researching the spring issue and have arrived at two possibilities for drop in replacement springs. They are two spring rates slightly higher than that the OEM provided. Before I drop 40 bucks to meed a minimum order I would be interested in how many others might be interested in purchasing at cost plus mailing. I am guessing that they will be the same in the Connie, but not certain at this time.

Thanks for your input.

I would like to give credit to this idea to Terry Burr who’s idea I adapted in a slightly different way.
