Illuminated Gas Pump?

Does anyone know of a 1:22.5 scale illuminated gas pump (1920s-1950s era) model that’s produced? Something along the lines of the gas-pumps pictured?

Have seen that style in model form, but the globes usually are not illuminated.

I have a couple of those pumps like David pictured.

If I remember correctly, the globes are solid cast.

You’d have to cut the globe off and build your own.

A company called Gearbox made these supposedly in 1/25 scale, I never measured them so i have no clue how accurate they are. I actually bought mine at Target, they were selling them along with other die cast stuff, mostly more modern NASCAR items. The date on mine are 1999 and the claim to be limited edition but you know how that goes. The globes on the ones I have are solid and appear to be plastic and are glued to the pumps pretty securely. They appear to be some what translucent so if you could get them off I suspect you could drill into the bottom and install an LED or bulb to light them up. I would guess these show up on eBay but I haven’t looked there. There are also a couple of online dealers that specialize in die cast vehicles that might offer them as well, Google is your friend !

Here’s a link to the Gearbox pumps. Yes, Google is your (well at least mine) friend. I just might order one or two myself

Upon closer examination (I drilled a small hole) the globe is in fact die cast as Ralph mentioned in spite of appearances so you would need to make your own if you wanted it illuminated.

Mark, the 8 inch jobbies might be a little large for our scale. The ones I have aren’t quite that tall.

I got a Christmas light set one year that was Texaco pumps. I took two and put a 12v white christmas light in them and they are in my Texaco station on the layout. Have to replace them every few years, due to water deposits.

Jerry,

It’s only the globes that are supposed to be lit. Great looking station though!

Joe, there is one on display at the local Spaghetti Warehouse, that actually has 2 bulbs located at the top of the tank. I would not want to be around when the thing was switched on. My point is, some models were wired to light the gasoline in the tank. Consumer safety wasn’t as important as it is now I guess.

You can see the bulbs to illuminate the “tank” on the first pump as well as the third pump from the end.

And the other 5 tanks are not illuminated, but ALL the globes are.

David:

Yes after a quick calculation they are 7.5 inches and would scale out to 12 feet and 8.25 inches in 1:20.3. I guess I’ll search for something a bit more appropriately sized. Thanks for the reality check!

The ones I have marked 1/25 scale measure 5" which would be 10’ in 1/24 which is about right, these pumps were quite tall as they depended on gravity to dispense the fuel. You used a pump handle to pump the amount you wanted up into the glass chamber which had volume markings on them then the fuel was fed by gravity into your vehicle or container.

Mine look fine from 10’, I’m not too picky. Look fine from the house. I seldom night run, so am not very close to them.

I agree. 8" seems way too inaccurate for a 1/22.5 scale. I’m trying to find an accurate pump to go with my LGB “Bobby’s Garage”. Thanks for the feedback

I’m not aware of any pumps that come lit. However here’s what I did to light my Conoco pump:

I started with a Piko gas pump:

To get a Conoco globe, I used the globe and Conoco decals that came in a Fry Gas Pump kit offered by Ozark Miniatures (part number 0255). However I’m not sure if these are available anymore as the product number does not show up on their website. But unlike most pump kits, the globe was not solid so it could be lit.

To light the globe I used a 12 volt bulb made by Miniatronics. I hooked up the bulb to my Malibu outdoor lighting system…tied into the building lights. To hide the light wires I used a small aluminum tube that goes through the pump.

Hope this gives you some idea on how to light a gas pump globe.

Very nice Matt. That’s how they should be lit.

They still show them as available @ trainworld: 1:18th scale -
