Large Scale Central

Ideas for simple turntables, function over form

I’m looking to build two turntables, quickly, that will work well, without being scale models.

They will sit on top of lazy susan bearings of about 5 inch diameter.

I would like something more than just a 2 X 6 chunk of cedar, but might have to settle for that if I can’t find simple ideas. I can cut my own wood without damaging fingers, so that is not a problem…

I don’t need dimensions as each TT will be custom to the location.

Thanks in advance.

My turntable is a hunk of 2x something, covered with cedar, on a lazy susan bearing. Quick and dirty, and works fine.

Bob,

That’s very interesting. Do you have construction photos? Something that shows the bones, so to speak?

And the pit as well?

I am curretly build 4 turntables out of 1/8 al and haven them poweder coated… all manuel and not poser to the rail as of now but working on that too… a 36" table would be around $500 with out the setail on the bridge. I will have a few pics over the next 2 weeks of it for you if you want… Pitt will be around 2" or 2.125 depth. the tables will have a 2" lip around them.

What’s a turntable?

maybe a table, where people eat in turns...?

I think it was a machine the had a vinly disk on it and played music…

Those are making a comeback.
I saw 2 very high end ones at a stereo shop the other day.
Thread drift…

We have 3 very simple turntables on the IPP&W, all using a “Lazy Susan” bearings. We call them the “Dave Goodson Memorial Turntable” style of turntable.
Check it out on the OVGRS web page, at: www.ovgrs.org/

Stereo Shop? They still have those?

Im thinking about making a turn table as well. I like the lazy susan idea and inexpensive. Where can I get a lazy susan? Lowes???

No construction pics, sorry.

I got my lazy susan at either Lowes or Home Depot, not sure which.

It is basically a piece of aluminum bent to shape and set on a Lazy Susan bearing. The rails are fastened with self tapping screws. If you are using track power, plastic ties would be required and the track around the turntable ramped slightly.
