Has anyone heard of such? They were sometimes called “reefer service cars.”
Supposedly used to provide ice at temporary locations in remote spots during a harvest or such. There is a photo of one at the bottom of page three of this site. There is another one at the bottom of page 10 of the same document. Appearantly, the first was to transport the ice, and the second (page 10) was to transfer the ice to a produce laden reefer.
It makes sense to me, given that the roads back then were not that good, and hauling the produce to a distant railhead would not have worked very well. Also, given that these locations were in use only for a few weeks, it didn’t make sense to build a permanent icing facility.
Cool, another modeling project!
