… the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Paralympics. I got two T-shirts to show for it, too (and other loot/swag/whatever). Along with a whole bunch of funny tales and “interesting” encounters.
The weather was also interesting, especially during the Para portion, it kept piling on snow for 6 days, then we got one day of torrential rains - luckily it was just a training and not a competition day! - followed by clearing and three days of sun tanning weather. As they say: “There’s nothing like a bit of variety”
Accommodation on the cruise ship was sub-par, but the food was OK. For the Para we were housed in the Workforce Village adjacent to the Athletes’ Village, which was a big improvement, but the food was mediocre to crummy. The alternative was McDonald’s (big time sponsor) right in the dining hall, which is a rock-bottom alternative! Yikes!
Mind you it was almost like going to work, get up at 04:40 or 05:10, be on the 05:30 bus, at the venue an hour or about 30 minutes later (cruise ship or workforce village), put in a good day of physical work and tramping around in softening snow, get back on the bus by 15:30 or 16:00. Get supper, hit the sack early since there was a repeat performance the next day.
Security was really tight during the Olympics and noticeably slacker during the Para. All in all it was a “once in a life time” experience!
