I just picked up a used LGB 2085 D Mallet

I just picked up a used LGB 2085D Mallet this weekend and had a couple questions:

-Is this basically the same as the Uintah Mallet or completely different with regards to motors, running, performance etc? -There are no pickup shoes on this unit like all my other LGBs and there is no place to install them. Is this normal? -Does anyone have a spare clear lens for the lower front 2 headlights? -I plan to convert this to an American style locomotive and want to start be replacing the cab. Does anyone have the instructions on how to remove the cab? Thanks

WOW! No one?? Now…for this forum… that’s amazing

Nope, noone. You will have to sell it. Best, Zubi

I found a posting on the web that explains how to take the engine apart. It was a how-to for installing DCC but the disassembly instructions are very helpful.

this may help

Sir - In order - 1. This loco is substantially different in design from the much later Uintah artic. It will quite happily haul ten DR green passenger cars with lights - all day long - as proven many times at shows. Mine is totally silent in operation, unless I have the sound switched on, of course. 2. This loco has ‘behind the wheels’ pickups on all wheels - at least, mine does. The rear face of the wheels make contact with a set of spring-loaded carbon brushes - messy and needs cleaning more than you think. 3. As for the spare lens cover - get used to it - they fall off. I have a stock of them, bulbs as well. PM me with your address, unless you want to keep it secret, in which case I can’t help you. 4. It has been done with a great deal of success - I’ll try and dig out the article in the Klambake GR magazine. The instructions on how to remove the cab can be found on the tear-down exploded view of the instructions already posted. I bought mine from Schmidtchen’s train store in Kaiserdamm, Berlin, at Christmas 1983. All 650 of them were all pre-ordered, and we were standing there in the snow holding our confirmation dockets - in numerical order. At 7am the huge LGB truck with Nuernberg license plates arrived, and we got our locos. It was running yesterday - the only thing I have replaced over the years [apart from the disappearing lens covers] is one motor and all the brushes. Once. tac www.ovgrs.org

Don't be amazed, be patient.

I’d hazard a guess that most of us who have one of these fine locos is either in Japan or Europe.

Or both.

I have one.
Haven’t had the pleasure of taking it apart yet,
therefore, not qualified to answer.

Timmy,
I also have both locomotives, but as your questions were very specific, did not respond. I have completely dismantled/rebuilt my Euro mallett, but to date, my Uintah is boxed, being operated only a few seconds to confirm operation. It seems that the LGB mogul drive block was unique in having power pickup ‘sliders’, as most LGB three-axle drive blocks relied on carbon brush power pickups contacting the rear face of the driving wheels. I have read many times that this method of power pickup, alone, on these drives, is problematic and those who regularly run their malletts, must clean the drive faces to ensure reliability.

Thanks all for the replies. This helps. Looking forward to seeing the article Tac.

Thanks

Tim - address again, please…email box self-emptied. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

ok…thanks TAC

Dear All,

As close as I could find in the mrmag (old Kalmbach) index:

LGB 1:22.5 scale, Sumpter Valley 2-6-6-2
Garden Railways, February 1999 page 114
( 2-6-6-2, ARTICULATED, LGB, NARROWGAUGE, REVIEW, STEAM, SV, ENGINE, LOCOMOTIVE, GDN )

Uintah No. 52
Garden Railways, March 1986 page 24
( 0-6-6-0T, AMERICANIZE, LGB, “PALLOW, JIM”, STEAM, TANKENGINE, UINTAH, ENGINE, LOCOMOTIVE, GDN )

The index has gotten behind in updating to newer issues, though.

Watched one of the Sumpter Valley models with tender run Monday on Mike Kidman’s layout at Kidman’s Tree Farm in Iowa. That is a beautiful piece of equipment and pulls like a horse. I use a Unitah on the inside/track powered portion of our railroad. Never having learned the secret decoder ring numbers of the LGB equipment, which one is 2085 D?

Having just looked at page 1, I think I just answered my own question with neither. Never mind.

TAC… got them! Thanks so very much!
