Large Scale Central

I feel so violated!

I kinda like it. I do think it is amazing what RR’s came up with to fill a need.

I noticed two thing of note to me in the two photos.

In the color one ( witch means newer to me ) that the log bunk that its hooked to has Arch Bar trucks. Which means that it could only be used “In House”

In the B/W one… note the outside braced boxcar in the background. I’d of thought that by the late 50’s that they were all gone by then…

Could be worse

Actually I kinda like it.

I have enough Bachmann 10 wheelers for parts projects that I could throw one of these together pretty quick like. Just need to come up with a big diesel motor. I wonder if I can come up with a near 1:29 supercharged Allison aircraft motor???

Dave, I would not assume that all of anything was gone by anytime. Back in the late 1990’s, I was at a steel processing plant. They were using a flat car with arch-bar trucks to move the hot slabs around the plant. Yes the car was “captive”, it could not be used in interchange service, but it was still doing its job of hauling stuff, long after those trucks, and the cast iron wheels in it, had supposedly gone away.

Hey Devon, here is another version for ya.

…and with the superstructure removed…

…and if you note in the lower right hand corner of the first pic, right by the pilot there is a sign…

Photos can be found of many user bashed jury rigged concoctions of geared locomotives to other forms of power…

In 1931 the Heisler Locomotive works built a true diesel electric locomotive using the frame and drive train from their steam versions, Powered by two 180 hp engines driving generators, the traction motors were mounted under the cab and connected to the trucks in a manner similar to their steam powered engines,. Only one was build and after trails at several different companies it found a home and operated continuously for nearly 35 years before being retired…

There are a number of other photos of this in Ben Klines book on Heisler if anyone is interested I can scan and post.

I love tangents. These odd ball one off shop built crazy things are just too cool.

We all know you love tangents Devon. Me, I want to build a Railmotor.

My personal favorite.

I wonder how this would have done at the drag strip?

I like all these oddball, jerry-rigged locos. And I’d rather see the remains of a steam loco turned into a diesel than have it all melted as scrap.
