Hurricane Ike

As a former resident of Galveston my heart goes out to everyone there. Ike is now approaching landfall. This is going to be devastating.

Ike seems to have passed Chicago. We had a very wet weekend and hoping to dry out a little this week.

My car leaks water and I can almost swim in her.

Little damage in middle southern Illinois. It seems the closer to St. Louis, the greater amount of rain and damage.

Quite an impressive weather pattern for any that wanted to or had to watch it march across the USA.

I have friends and many acquaintances in Galveston. Some I have been in contact with left. Most likely nothing left to go back to.
Here is a link to some pictures from the Galveston Daily News. Much more in-depth than I’ve seen on the national sites.

Botanic called Saturday evening, “Don’t try to come tomorrow!”

Got an email this morning, “We’re back open again. Had some flooding. The garden railroad fared well.”

I understand the Botanic tried to use their wetlands (the whole place is a swamp) to take up some of the runoff, but was overwhelmed.

I just heard from one of my friends in Galveston.
His home is ruined. Ten feet of water ruined all the contents. He thought he had flood insurance. Turns out his agent screwed him.
It gets worse. He left his car when he bugged out and rode with his son. Of course, the car is junk now.
He has literally lost everything, with no hope of collecting a dime from insurance.
