How to solve "timmyd's" coupler problem

Hi all,

OK, so “timmyd” is looking for a practical solution for his logging caboose.

The following is known:

Has to operate with a variety of equipment on a R1 (600mm) radius.

My suggestion: mount the coupler on a tang that pivots ahead of the kingpin - no it is not a proper talgo arrangement. Use the Kadee coupler which is self-contained while having the largest lateral swing.

This will result in a compound movement: a) the coupler will use up all the lateral movement first… then b) the tang will swing as far as necessary without affecting the swiveling of the trucks (as would be the case with a Talgo arrangement). The tang is centered by a spring which connects to the center of the caboose. Since both ends use the same arrangement the tangs can swing independent of each other or the trucks.

Drawing for better illustration coming up in a little while!

I made a comment in the other thread that might work too. And that is to use the swing plate designed for the Aristo heavyweights. That could be mounted underneath and possibly made to look fairly good too. I think it’s #838.

It’s a shot in the dark but what the hey!

If he’s using L&P couplers use a tad bit longer link…

Yes, that should work and is a lot less work than my idea. No reinventing the wheel!

Addendum: Drawing superfluous since the Kadee 838 should do the job quite nicely.
No reinventing the wheel!

Addendum 2: Looking at the variety of rolling stock “timmyd” has on his roster (Fr.Fred would call it mish-mash) might as well standardize on the make of coupler that offers the most variants to adapt to most situations: the name of the coupler is Kadee.

No reinventing the wheel!

Hi,

Kadee 838 does not couple with Bachmann couplings Timmy is using. Look it up in Garden Railways GARTENBAHN and GB-profi.

An advice which “should work” is no real advice. Just patter. No help.

Have Fun

Hmmmm. That’s odd. I couple Kadees with Bachmanns all the time. It ain’t perfet, but it works.

Have fun, Juergen

Got it! LGB knuckle couplers… Here’s the video: http://timothydehan.com/redmondcreekrr/images/LoggingCaboose/Caboose2.wmv (7.15MB)

Looks like that works.

Standardizing on one type of coupler is still not a bad idea.

The issue was never about standardizing on one type of coupler

I didn't say it was, I just said that it's not a bad idea. ;) :) But to each his own!

Making life easier is just a concept.

Yup. Hand me the baling wire, Anna Maria.

Chris,

Not to worry, it’s just a hobby!

For a while, I dabbled in P4 modelling. Scale hook and link couplings. Even back then, I couldn't see the things. Now, I doubt I could hold the shunter's pole steady either :( I have an Annie and a couple of Bachmann car kits that I hope to equip with Kadees so I can visit Father Fred's baptistry (if ever I can get the time). Of course, that also means building a battery/RC-throttle car (a baggage car rather than a gondola, I think). For the rest, I shall stick with hook and loop. Maybe chopper couplings eventually.

Chris.

The last time I had one of those “couple by hand” systems was ca. 1949-50. It was de rigeur on the wind-up trains at that time.
I believe Tin-Plate Märklin, Buco and a slew of others had either the same system or something on the same design.

Oh yeah, don’t remember what triggered the impulse, but for some reason I was looking at the couplers mounted on my Aristo Critter (raw material for a bash!) - low and behold those couplers are double jointed just like what’s required. Can be moved to approx. 45º either side. Blooming amazing!
Nah, I don’t have a caboose to mount them on.

Thats exactly what I do! Works fine for me.

Yeah…the LGB knuckle coupler the way it is mounted is double jointed as well. It works really slick!

Mo pictures…
