How to make a brake wheel?

Since brake wheel constantly get damaged on my layout–especially on models of older prototypes–I’m wondering if anyone has a neat simple trick for modeling brake wheels. I’m rummaging though drawersand parts boxes but not spotting anything. Any ideas?

Would an old watch/clock gear work? You may find cheap ones at yard sales to rip apart.

Mike, had the same problem myself when scratch building my last passenger car.I had one brake wheel and needed another.I made mine from a white metal rim, model boat porthole, and used a piece of brass rod drilled for the spokes which were also brass. These were soldered in and trimmed to length. The boss/spoke assembly was then CA’d onto the rim which was filed to an acceptable thickness.Bit complicated really but the end result was worth it and it enabled me to finish the car.

Wrap some brass rod around something round and solder it together, then solder on some cross bars. Or use super glue.

I’ve used the wheels from Ozark and Trackside, they’re great. I was just thinking maybe somebody had an easy homemade solution. I haven’t found one yet. May try soldering some wire

Play nicer with your toys, or don’t get the kind with fiddly bits to get damaged or fall off?

My children knock brake staffs and other ‘jewelry’ off, too…so the stuff thy are allowed to run is plain unmodified Lehmann Toytrain and nearly indestructible.

Caleb’s first reaction to the oz wheel on one of my tenders was to turn it. I had glued it on. Needed gluing again.
