How to deal wit stubborn weeds?

I have 250 ft. of track in my back yard. I have been fighting the elements just like the big RR’s.
In 2009 I have had 7 washouts. 1 major wash out. Seems like every time I get every thing ready to go something else happens.
Now with all the rain last year the weeds are killing me. They were every where at the end of the season.
I don’t want to run my good train on bad track. It’s bad enough running the little train on bad track.

I was thinking about pulling up the outside track and moving it inside to the walls down stairs. A lot of work, but I don’t have to deal with the weather.
What do you think? Is that a good move or not?

Mix diesel fuel, rock salt and round up… kills EVERYTHING - even dandelions. And nothing will grow back all season.

Don't forget to add a few drops of dish soap for better penetration of the plants.

Why the other stuff?
I use just plain Roundup on the layout. Seems to be OK.

I had some washouts, built some cribbing and it really helped…weeds? find something that kills them.

Use extended control RoundUp which kills the weeds and prevents weed seeds from germinating. You can also use regular RoundUp and a product like Preen which prevents weed seeds from germinating. Once the weeds are dead just cut them down with grass shears or a string trimmer. If you pull them up you will unearth dormant weed seeds.
Once you left things go for awhile those weeds will produce many thousands of seeds. Mulch is also your friend as most seeds need sunlight to germinate.

Weeds?

Our experience here in So.Calif. with 360 day “growing season:”
To kill those in place: Round Up
To PREVENT future weeds: Preen (a brand name)

The Preen product works! I was very skeptical, yet have found one application spread among existing plants will last 2+ months by covering the ground per their instructions. Preen is a visually very fine dry material, much like a fine lawn food. It prevents germination of some claimed huge list of weeds. COSTCO is a great source when they put out their garden supplies. The COSTCO bulk size is cheaper than what I have found at Home Depot or Loews.

Cheap bleach is the way to go according to Fred!

Cheap Bleach?
Pool chlorine will kill all not just the weeds – same for cheap bleach?
Perhaps our literary padre is considering the full extermination of weeds whereby other plants are not of concern.

Any further data?

David, there is a product called Spectricide Weed and Grass Killer that is good on weeds and grass. Kills in 24 hours. Comes pre-mixed in a black gallon jug and cost around $8.00 a gallon. You can get it at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace and Walmart. Spectricide has a heavy brush killer you have to mix up.

Ron-
My estimate is you have used Spectricide – if so, any problem with existing plants. We have a succulents in our train area.
Thanks,
Wendell
