Hi guys. Here is a temporary message in hope that we give the Wiki section a fair go. I am quite happy for this submission to be edited or even removed. Editors, please keep in mind that a Wiki page is designed to impart some knowledge and something that works for one of us, might not work for another. But that’s ok, others may desire to offer up an alternative when they collaborate on an edit.
So without further ado… here is my submission for an introduction…
Getting Started: Contributing to the LSC Wiki
Welcome to the Large Scale Central Wiki – your place to share, improve, and preserve the collective knowledge of the garden railroading community.
Whether you’re a seasoned builder or just starting out, this Wiki is built for you — and by you.
Why Contribute?
The LSC Forum is full of great info — wiring tips, battery options, locomotive reviews, scenic ideas — but it can get buried in years of discussion. In fact the idea that LSC actually originated in 2000 about 25 years ago at the time of this entry.
This Wiki is our shared living manual, where useful info can be easy to find, update, and build on.
Who Can Edit?
Anyone with a forum account can edit, add, or improve Wiki pages.
You don’t need to be a tech whiz — if you can post in the forum, you can help in the Wiki.
What Can You Contribute?
You can:
- Summarize helpful forum threads
- Share your step-by-step project builds
- Write guides on topics like weatherproofing, battery setups, or using DCC
- Add links, photos, diagrams, or video tutorials
- Keep existing articles up to date
Even fixing typos or adding photos helps a lot.
How to Contribute (Quick Start)
-
Find a Page to Edit or Create One
Use the Wiki search, or follow links to existing articles. If a topic doesn’t exist yet, start a new one! -
Click Edit
Look for the “Edit” button at the bottom right of each Wiki page. It’s that easy. -
Make Your Changes
- Use plain language
- Break info into sections or lists if it helps
- Add pictures or links where needed
- Use your own words — no need to copy and paste forum posts
-
Click Save
Give a short note describing what you changed (e.g. “Added link to sound install guide”) and click save.
Wiki vs Forum: What’s the Difference?
Forum | Wiki |
---|---|
Ongoing discussions | Permanent reference articles |
Opinions, experiences, questions | Summaries, guides, shared knowledge |
Posts are personal | Pages are community-owned and improved |
The Forum is great for chat and updates — the Wiki is where the best info gets organized.
Don’t Worry About “Messing It Up”
Everything is saved, and we can always restore older versions.
Just do your best — others can help tidy things up if needed.
If you’re not sure how to start, you can also:
- Leave a note on the forum asking for help with a page
- Start a draft in the Wiki’s sandbox area
Some Popular Starting Points
Here are a few pages that are always being expanded:
- Battery Power Basics
- Garden Railway Pond Tips
- Choosing a Track Type
- Converting a Loco to RC
- Seasonal Maintenance Tips
Jump in where you feel comfortable — it’s okay to start small.
Need Help?
Ask in the LSC Forum Wiki Discussion Thread or check for help pages in the Wiki itself.
We’re a friendly bunch, and someone’s always around to lend a hand.
Let’s Build This Together
The LSC Wiki is only as good as the knowledge we share. By contributing, you’re helping others — and future you!
Let’s make it easy for everyone to find the best garden railway info, all in one spot… here in LargeScale Centralia!
