How much improved?

I am considering buying an older [but in excellent condition] LGB Forney. Are there significant improvements in the new run of Forneys that would make it wiser to buy new?
Thanks,
JimC.

I certainly cannot comment on the older original Forney, but I have just purchased a new LGB Forney, D&RGW #251, a fantastic locomotive, excellent detail, and a sweet runner.
Unless you can do a magic deal on an older unit, I would go for a new version.

I have both…the first Sandy River and the latest D&RGW.
The first one is one of the strongest running and trouble free locos I have owned.
I don’t have enough time on the D&RGW for any reliability reviews. It is also made in China and not as “heavy feeling” as the older German made unit. I do not like the on board MTS module. They also will not double head–having different starting speeds.
Years ago, I converted my Sandy River from an 0-4-4T to a 2-4-4T (Like the new D&RGW).
