Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

Considering I started driving a Mercury Grand Marquis:

And then ended up driving a Oldsmobile Alero and now drive a Corolla…I’d kill for that 911. 912s aren’t bad either. Super envious  Joe: Your name seems to ring a bell…Road & Track? Used to read religiously, but Dad stopped subscribing when he realized that he never saw any of the magazines :frowning:

That's where I know the name from :) Nice Porsche ;) Ralph

Hey Joe, you’re right on that Fiat 500…I am thinking of being “stupid” one more time and plunking down some coin on the Abarth as kind of a second mid-life crissis.

My first car was a screaming red 124 Spider, miss it.

Bob, looks like a Formula Ford (now Honda) to me. Raced those in a couple of media races and did OK, but no cigar. I did race a lot of Slowroom Stock and had a fair amount of success on an amateur level. Did several S/S enduros and actually won a 24 hour, mostly because one of my co-drivers was 4- or 5-time National champ Don Knowles, who pretty much carried the rest of us on his back--at Nelson Ledges, Ohio.
Yep, the class is now known as Formula F, with the addition of the Honda L15A7 1.5L engine into the class. The Honda cars are much more reliable, but they still are down a bit on the HP curve, and HPD is still trying to get the restrictor right to have it be competitive, but not obsolete every Kent engine overnight. Tricky situation, as not everybody (including me) can afford the 12-15k for a conversion.

Further hijacking this thread he wrote: “Bob, I read an interesting article in Speedway Illustrated (Jan 2012) on hopping up the Honda twin-cam for mini-stock car racing, apparently a series in the Northwest. I don’t know if you FF guys use the same engine and if this is allowed. Of course, ‘allowed’ is such a nebulous word. To me it’s the same as ‘suggested.’ Someday I will write the tell-all book on showroom stock racing and how one (but not me, of course) improved upon performance–without getting caught.
At Nelson Ledges one year, someone said: ‘They must be cheating because we are and they’re faster than us!’ Interesting, and fun, times.”

Robbie, yeah, I hear that a lot. My magazines–model railroading, photography, cars–pile up and I have these marathon sessions trying to plow through them. I rip out all the ads, then stuff I don’t care about, and leave the nuggets to pursue later. Of course, I have piles of nuggets. Or is “nuggets” another word for “road apples,” which is another word for…oops, I forgot. This is a PG-rated site.

I am planning on my next car being the 500 Abarth. I’ve driven the regular 500. With a stick is can be fun despite the smaller HP plant. Can’t wait to try the Abarth.

For you and me Victor…

That commercial is SO way better than the Jel-Lo ones.

1949 Willys Wagon street rod…Mustang II front, T-Bird tilt, Mustang 8" rear, sway bars both ends, lowered in the nose, 3/4 race 50Merc mill. Goes like stink…NOT a belly button car.
My Jag is fun…not super fast, but I can live with about 30MPG’s on the open road. 2.4L with twin Solex downdraughts do beter than SU’s.
My have to finally get out to Bonneville this year…my cousin is rebuilding Challenger 2 into Challenger 2.5. Loking for Land Speed piston record.

TOC et all.

Any and all car guys that haven’t spent at least a weekend on the “Salt” should include it in your “Bucket List” Jest make up your mind and DO IT!!! You will never ever regret it. Third week in Aug is traditionally “Speed Week” Check the SCTA (Southern California Timing Assoc.) web site for the exact days of running. It’s a little boring to set around while the cars are going thru tech inspection, but a great time to check out the cars and the pits. Utah Salt flat Racers Assoc. also hosts meets on the flats also (Sept or Oct). Daily admission is cheep, and the week pass is a steal… On the Cheap… bring the camping gear and join the “End of the Road” Gang for free camping where the salt meets the road. Great people… I spent an hour one night chatting with Ed about cars and growing up in the 60’s in LA area, only to realize it was The “ED ROTH” of “Rat Fink” fame… Jest another cool guy on the Salt.

Beware… The first time is CHEAP… then you get Salt Fever… and a race car is in your future… BTW their is a class for every type, size, style, and engine you can think of, including over the road “Big Rigs”, they will do over 200 MPH!!

Watch and see what Challenger 2.5 does…

Dave, I have a DVD for you to Netflix, “Tales of the Ratfink”

Its a bio-documentary on the life and times of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and of his cars and their influence on popular culture, the discussions are taken from the “if these cars could talk” perspective, its ALOT of fun, one of my favorite movies!

I’ll have to look it up, since that it has a personal touch. When I was racing this was my ride to the salt.

 I’m a Studebaker fan from way back. This is me somewhere around 1957 or 8…
