Used to do these. Still have an interest in them. Even did a TV Program build for a show called “Chop - Cut - Rebuild Season 3”. Building structures for garden railroads is certainly a lot cheaper and you don’t get greasy…
Mike,
I’ve always loved this “hobby” as well. I grew up with them as my Dad was a great hotrod builder.
Been thru several cars, but right now only have a 2005 Chevy SSR.
I recently bought a 2011 HHR SS that I am going to customize a little. Next on my wish list is a newer 'Vette.
Still have a Ford big block and some other stuff in the shop.
I liked that show! I did build a toy and still run it on the street but I have too many expansive hobbies to freshen it up after 11 years.

You can’t go wrong with a nice 2010 Corvette. “31 mpg @80 mph on cruise control”

Almost bought a Vette but everybody here in Socal seems to have one. So I went for the 507hp and 205mph top end. BMW M6 Black Edition. Have not seen another like it yet. Just wanted to be different.

Oh, alright. My speed fix

Me in the blue #10 fighting for position
The best two days of ownership of a vette? The day you buy it and the day you sell it! I’ve had a 63 convertible, a 72, and an 80. Still wish I had the 63, the other two “not so much” Regal
The basic problem with all HP cars is that the fastest you can realistically drive them is 75-80mph…90 top. Faster than 90 and the cops can impound your vehicle, revoke your license and give you jail time. You can also be dropped by your insurance. Its a real pita I really dont understand why 500hp vehicles are offered for sale when they can never drive it the way it was designed to be. I really LOVE sports cars but for the most part the really impressive ones are just expensive paper weights. My next car will be the Fiat 500 Abarth SS when it hits the US next summer. Top Gear loves it, be good for navigating the Freeways here.
Well, I have found that a really good Laser/Radar Detector and knowing my favorite stretch of the 73 Toll Road has allowed me to touch 145 several times on a clear dry day with no cars around. Once I forgot to roll my window up and darn didn’t even notice. Got to love the German engineers and their aerodynamics. That '63 Vette was a keeper for sure. That demand a pretty penny if they are in good shape. Here is California, anything over 85 is reckless driving and potential arrest. But what the heck, I am 62 and feel the need for speed once in a while. The 500hp allows me to make sure to be able to get out of the path of those with their HUA if needed, plus going 45 down PCH in a 1off M6 attracts the girls like honey to bees. LOL. Just cruising I can laugh inside when all the Chrysler products, non ZR1/Z06 Vettes, Camaros, muscle cars, Asian Imports, and most MBs and Porches buzz around. I don’t think many people realize the M6 is fastest, most powerful BMW ever fielded that is street legal. They must think what can a 6 or v8 do. Oops, it has a 5.0 v-10 with 40 valves. BTW: Stop light to stop light = 0-60 in 4 secs. My only problem is watching the acceleration as tires are very expensive and the beast tends to break them loose at each shift point through first 4 gears. Ok I am done now. Happy motoring in what makes your boat float!
Attracting girls like honey bees would make the Queen Bee a tad upset. LOL
The trouble with detectors is that they cant spot planes. Thats how I got my last ding out between Victorville and Barstow. Found out later those white stripes painted in the emergency lanes are used by planes to calculate speed. Never saw the Chip until too late The cop was cool, only wrote me up for 80 even though I was going closer to 95, in my Xb no less. What I really want is a Caterham, but I think it would scare the be’jezuz out of my wife.
Yes the Vegas run on the 15 is a target rich environment for the CHP. If your ride has a sunroof and you have a passenger then they can have the aerial lookout job. I used to have a 79 Trans Am with t-tops and any high speed runs I spent more time looking up than anywhere else…LOL!
Oh boy. An opportunity to show off my toy!!!

Yes it’s street legal. It’s licensed in Pennsylvania as a speciality vehicle/ motorcycle. The engine is a 350 c.i. Chevy, hooked up to a Turbo-350 automatic trans. I used the full width rear axle but modified it with a four link suspension. The rear is suspended with shortened front springs from the donor car {'74 Camaro} The floorboards, dashboard and storage trunk are made with locally timbered white ash. ‘Cyclops’ will do 0 - 60 in less than 4 seconds. It was a fun project to build, and is a blast to cruise around town
Wanna race mike??
I would not want to be the cause of you killing yourself and any passengers. Fortunately my BMW stops as good as as it goes forward. LOL. We once worked on a trike that had a 3.8 V-6 and the guy who owned it used to pull wheelies in all three gears. (Turbo 350). Once we finished it for him, we had a prayer service at the shop in preparation of his early demise. Never heard anything about him or his psycho machine.
Could be worse. Could have 2 wheels. I saw some dude on a Harley with ape hanger bars so high he could barely reach them. He was also a shorty and his legs barely touched the footpegs let alone the ground. So this guy is virtually standing on the bike hanging to the bars for dear life as he ripped out of the parking lot just barely, BARELY, in control. I often wonder how long he lived…
My wife’s little HHR. My SSR in the garage. And a Train Geezer buddy’s Vette.

Victor Smith said:True. The only other thing that amzes me is the number of times I am "stuck" behind some other high horse power car while driving in my Honda Fit, Mercedes 300D (non Turbo!), Suzuki Swift, Citroen DS, Volvo 122, etc. with much less horsepower...

Most BMW owners honestly would be more at home in a Buick Park Avenue but it lacks the image. There are the exceptions, like the friend with a 7 series with a five speed, that car was darn fun!
Well I most certainly am not one of “Most BMW owners”. My M6 will beat the poop out of you if you are behind the wheel for more than an hour straight. Road Racer with license plates. Goes faster than just about everything on the road, stops in nanoseconds, fits you like a glove, attracts young women and best of all, the young punks here in Socal can’t afford one, so I don’t have to worry about driving a Xerox Copy of somebody else’s stuff. Had some hotty ask me why all the old guys have the “sick” cars. My answer was: Us old guys have all the $$$, so we got the $$$ cars. LOL!
The power to weight ratio mike (350/1600) does not transfer enough weight to the rear wheels to lift the front end of this machine. Unfortunatly, I built it on a budget 11 years ago and re-used the 1974 Camero differential which was in the height of the gas crisis (?) so I only have 1:2.25 gears in back. Top end is beyond my courage level.
Sure, we can go 120+ if we want too.
For me it’s the launch! G forces!
I have yet to get mine over 90.
(Yah, I know. Drive like a little ol man… )
