hostappserviceupdater manager

Just wanted to make you guys aware that there’s some insidious stuff out there. My high-performance laptop slowed significantly this week, and I thought it was Microsoft downloading a big update (they seem to give themselves top priority, so it slows me down.) However, after a few days, I smelled a rat and looked in my Task Manager process list. (Right click your taskbar to find and start the Task Manager.) There was a seemingly innocent process called hostappserviceupdater.exe soaking up 10-20% of my CPU.

If in doubt, Google! I’ll leave it up to you to read the info, but sufficient to say it is NOT a Microsoft process. It is introduced to your computer for some unknown reason by maybe Amazon, Facebook ?? It does have an “Uninstall” which works if it is stored in your user folder - I suggest you search for the name hostappserviceupdater on your system drive (usually C:) using windows explorer. The when it is found, open the file location and run the uninstall program in the parent folder.

There was also some suggestion that it is malware if it is in your Program Files folder, as apparently other nasty stuff tries to pretend it is the same thing.

Note that on windows computers one should delete the prefetch contents in the windows directory. these are power on start up files and some are not needed.

Directory will be recreated on a new bootup.

I have a standard weekly regime that I follow, and it’s worked for many years (and been updated) and often it brings slow computers back to life:

Also uninstalling programs you don’t need or use, especially since many programs check for updates often, if you have 20 programs using 1% of your CPU, that is 20% of your CPU!

there are further tips pages on my site, one for windows 10, one for 8, etc.

Just look under the menu system, or on the bottom of the page I linked earlier… (either way will get you to the sub pages that are more detail/specific)

Also, I have some limited bandwidth available for emails on issues.

Computers are sort of a hobby of mine.
