Seen this on a woodworking website. It is 1/12th scale but it sure is some nice work.
Not being a country boy, I always thought a barn was for cows and a stable was for horses. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)
Right now my barn is none too stable.
Nice work there.
Joe,
I think when your a snooty equestrian type you keep your horse in a stable. When your a country farm boy/cowboy you keep them in the barn. I think the use of terms directly relates to your station in life. I could be wrong though. I know we always kept our horses in their part of the barn next to the cows and pigs. We never had a riding arena we had a coral. We wore cowboy boots and a cowboy hat not patent leather hip boots and a helmet. We only milked cows in the barn, we kept them outside where they laid their meadow muffins and cow pies.
Horses were kept inside, few real men bonded with a cow, a horse could save your life.
Cows we tip … over.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)
Yee Haw!

Yea, John. I took my dog, a 23 pound ball of fur, to my friends farm once. She tried to play with the cows. Cows don’t seam to play. So she and the goat played in the field for well over an hour. You want to talk about a tired puppy.
Devon, you could be right. I am a boots and hat kinda guy myself.

When your a drunk college student I don’t recommend cow tipping. The one and only time we attempted this My friend ran out full bore and laid a shoulder into the side of a cow. It did not fall over, instead it got rather deranged and chased him to the fence that he jumped like an Olympic high jumper. Turns out it was not a cow but a a bull and we learned what is meant by mess with the bull and oyu might get the horns.

It was not a well planned out event…And I am pretty sure we all over tipped then tipped over ourselves.

Stable- a building in which domestic animals are sheltered and fed; especially : such a building having stalls or compartments
Barn-a usually large building for the storage of farm products or feed and usually for the housing of farm animals or farm equipment
So it would appear that all stables are barns but not all barns are stables. Barn is a catch all term for a large outbuilding used in farming for various reasons. Where as a stable would be a barn whose specific purpose is to house animals.
Devon,
I think I like your first explanation the best…
“I think when your a snooty equestrian type you keep your horse in a stable. When you’re a country farm boy/cowboy you keep them in the barn.”

Then why did John Wayne always go to the stable to get his horse?
