I started playing around with painting a structure to look like weathered wood. I took some of Ray’s advise on painting plastic to look like weathered wood. After playing around for a while, this is what I came up with. Can I get away with it looking like real wood? If not what should I add. Dont worry my feeling wont be hurt (Shut up Rooster)
Shawn, it looks OK to me…
I think you got the variation of the weathering of the paint real good. I’d use it on my layout. I think the roof needs some work. It looks to plastic
What Jake said…
It looks outstanding.
Shawn,
I like it - looks very nice. The only thing I MIGHT add is a black wash (alcohol and India Ink) to add some shadows and tone it down just a bit. Nice job.
Shawn said:Honestly Shawn I think the structure/work looks good.....it's the roof and chimney your not feelin' I believe......The roof is a HUGE factor in structures and architecture lines and is often factored out. Beat the roof up a bit or weather the crap out of it ....remember what weathers the wood does 3 fold one the roof and the chimney needs a cap or a pipe (lined) in it. Just my thoughts ;)

I think it’s well on it’s way to being a great looking structure. I agree with all of the suggestions presented, but can’t add any.
what Rooster says. the walls are fine. the roof needs work.
From 10’ away, it looks fine to me. Those CSM buildings make great bash material BTW…
Thanks every for your opinion, it really it helps. I agree the roof needs work and I think once thats done and I add more of a black wash to the building it should all blend in much better. Ill start working on that and post some updates.
Shawn, ya did good on the walls. Now get to the roof and chimney.
Shawn, remember that “Less is More.” I think that the sides are done, with the exception of adding a black wash. Start with a very dilute mix. Putting black wash on a building is like putting salt an mashed potatoes. Its easy to put on, but difficult to take off.
For the roof, I would try dry brushing several shades of gray, then a black wash, as above. Good job so far.
Shawn,
Looks GREAT so far. After thinking on the roof a bit, if it were mine, I might take a utility knife blade and scrape along the rows of shingles right at the overlap joint a bit to make the depth of the shingle tab vary a bit. Put a bit of an angle on the blade so the up hill side of the shingle looses more material. After that a STIFF wire brush in the slope direction to get some texture in that direction. Lastly I might try to ‘chip’ out a few shingle tab corners to show some heavy aging. Last would be some heavy weathering to dull the sheen and make it blend in with the surroundings.
My tuppence, FWIW.

Terrible. You should just mail it to me.
j/k Looks great. Roof does need to be beat up a bit though and I agree on the wash.
Terry
Building looks good, and I agree that the roof needs work. I’d also do some kind of dirty/peeling/faded off-white on the door and window trim.
Looks good Shawn, I have that same building but the roof is totally different. They must be using different roof on different runs of these. A little dry brushing and you will be good to go and dont forget the glass for the windows.

Shawn : I like the sides so much I want you to direct me to “Ray’s advice”. Can you do that? Tks!
