Homemade details for Pennsylvania 4-6-0

This baby will get same details as GV 4-6-0 but here the starting point is a different item. Last year I bought a rotary cutter with intent of making this cab awning out of brass wire; an ancient cotton handkerchief; and fabric paint. While PRR 4-6-0 doesn’t need them, note air tank and sand box under cab of 2-8-0, which is in Kalmbach’s Steam Locomotive Cyclopedia. This copy is around 30 years old, I don’t know if it is still in print.

Photo link is busted.

Well, I thought it was. :stuck_out_tongue:

Alright! With some 1/32 brass tube and .032 wire she’s now got lube lines to valves and also free-standing sand pipes. Molded on pipes were carved off before painting boiler. Eventually will extend sand pipes down to bottom of front driver where they should end. Also visible is control rod and lever for sand dome. Photo is a bit fuzzy but it still works.

With 3/32 copper tube got whistle mounted to side of steam dome. Put piece of styrene rod inside tube before bending to keep it from collapsing at bend. Bent with help of KaDee coupler trip-pin bending pliers for their HO couplers. Then cut section of tube to size. Had to drill out plastic with a bit in a pin vise to get whistle in. Had to file down whistle stem just a bit. Drilled dome with a 3/32 bit in a pin vise for press-fit with tube. Will paint copper tube green like dome. Now, to come up with or make another pop valve for dome to go where whistle came out. Hmm . . .

Not sure if whistle pull would be more realistically rope or rod, of if both are okay. Decided to use rod made of brass wire. Will end up painted green.

Georgie the research assistant.

Nice job. A little bit of detail goes a long way
Ralph

Thanks

Still plotting things, air plumbing; reverse control rod; cylinder cocks; air hoses on pilot.
Just do them along here and there as ideas, time, and ability, come together.

I don’t think Goergie likes to get his picture taken from the look on his face, but still cute. I have a track inspector, Callie, who likes to stay in the picture also. She always helps when I’m working on the railroad.

BTW nice work!!!

Progress notes in photo story format.

Eventually decided on .060 styrene half round for gutters, drip strips, whatever they are called.

Decided to go with wider stripes.

:) Thanks!

Okay, yeah, this is coming together nicely  Long way yet to go with caboose.

Looking a little different from box stock, eh?

Looks good!
Ralph

Very nicely done. Plenty of good photos helped explain the modeling process. Thanks.
Doc Tom

Thanks guys

Forrest, that after is definitly a vast improvment over the stock engine. Nice work.

WOW Forrest it really looks great.
David

Thanks gang
Now she’s really showing lack of a crew. Have a kit of Preiser track workers who a couple of might be able to be rearranged into engineer and fireman.

And then . . .

Am considering drilling out firebox door, scratchbuilding and open one, and putting flickering light thing inside, http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/266-U3F. There is enough room between back of weight over motor and backhead on boiler molding.
Probably have power supplied by 9v battery in smokebox taking space where smoke generator used to be.
Be really neat at night with fire glow reflecting off fireman figure about to toss in another scoop of coal.

At rate I get things done, call it finished in 2013?
