I just ordered two Hokiado Elms from Kidman’s Tree Farm, in Des Moines. I had one when I was in town, but it died when I moved it out here in the country. They said theirs is doing find outside in Des Moines. I have a Bonsai Juniper in a pot that I put inside every winter, have a S facing window in the garage. I thought I might plant the Elms in their pots, then pull them up in the fall and put them in the garage with the juniper. Anyone have experiece with them?
Found this at Evergreen Trees in Kelseyville CA.
9640 Ulmus parvifolia ‘Hokkaido’ (Princess Elm) There are hardly enough superlatives to adequately describe this plant. An extremely tiny elm with 1/8 inch leaves congested on small dark brown stems sometimes 20 to the inch. Thirty year old plants may reach about 3 feet with 12 inch or greater very corky trunks. Despite its small stature this plant is not especially slow growing; 4 year old trees may be 10 inches tall with 1 inch or greater trunks. Corky bark begins developing almost immediately. Some people report that they have trouble growing this tree, and it almost always can be traced to over-protection. (emphasis mine) This tree thrives in full sun and heat, and even partial shade can bring its demise. Bonsai plants can tolerate afternoon shade in hottest driest areas. Needs good drainage and regular even water but not wet conditions which will cause root and crown rot. The wood is extremely brittle and even a casual brush by the plant may snap off one inch branches. Wiring is nearly impossible and any significant shaping must be achieved through pruning.
I know nothing about this plant, but from the write up, it sounds perfect for your location. Keep us posted.
Thanks Steve. Was hoping someone with personal experience with them on their RR. We had one, when we lived in town 15 years ago, but it did not survive out here. Kidman’s say they have one growing outside year round and it’s going okay. I have had good luck in the past with their plants. Guess they will have some at Kansas City. I’m not going, usually see them every year at Marty’s. THey bring trains and plants!
I got the elms today. Look great, amazing tiny leaves look just like full size elm leaves. I planted them in the pots, will pull them out when it gets cold and keep them in the garage with my Bonsai juniper.

Maybe tomorrow!
