HO scale mini diorama

Way back in the mid-1980s, I created a bunch of mini dioramas of desert scenery, featuring the types of plants and terrain found in parts of the Anza-Borrego desert of San Diego County. These were sealed under glass domes and given to various family and friends for Christmas.

One of these little dioramas has just come back into my possession. It’s four inches in diameter. Here are a few photos of it. The colors have faded slightly over the years, and it’s kind of hard to get good photos through the glass:

Very nice and a creative project. I could see myself doing such a thing. Heap it on the pile of things to do. Do you have photos of others. Ever do a joshua tree. I love them things.

What did you use for the Yucca?

I like the stonework particularly

Where’d you hide the cholla. That stuff would jump out and bite my legs. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Now having that happen while speeding down a trail on a bike AHHHHHHHGHHHHH!!!

No thats not me

Ouch! I’d hate to be the medic tasked with pulling that stuff off. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Another great bit of modeling, Ray. Having driven past the In-Ko-Pah area on Interstate 8, them rocks out there look exactly like yours! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I guess you didn’t hear. Ray got his start by making those rocks out on Interstate 8. Now he just sticks to the smaller stuff.

Thanks! All of the mini dioramas were given away almost 30 years ago. This is the only one I’ve seen since then, and is the only one I ever got photos of.

The scenery was pretty basic stuff… the boulders are plaster casts of real rocks, the ground is plaster with some real dirt and grit. The plants were made from various types of dried flowers or twigs; some I bought from a craft store and some were from the garden.

The agave stalks (tall things with yellow flowers) were the most work. I started with dried stalks of sweet alyssum flowers, and trimmed them to shape. Painted them with acrylics, then dabbed on small blobs of yellow paint, and sprinkled it with yellow ground foam. The spiky base of the agave was some kind of dry floral thing from the craft store, painted with acyrlics.

I used short pieces of pipe cleaner to make barrel cactus. The chollas are a little hard to make out in these photos, but they were made from the same stalks as the agaves, but cut shorter and with only a few stubby branches near the top. Then they were coated with ground foam and painted.

I’ve never tried making any joshua trees.
