HLW Big John bash with Bachmann Columbia loco

Hi Guys:

I views Dave Jacobsen’s bash. excellent work. Really transforms the HLW Big John loco into an attractive model.

Maybe Dave would like to post more construction info?

Very nice. I really like the look of the engine now. Big improvment. I think it would look even better if the boiler and bunker were painted black and the frame and cab painted a wood color. Not sure if the color fits a logging engine.

Norman,

I am the owner of the said locomotive…

Vic Smith is the builder/basher of it,

I believe it started it’s reincarnation from a

Bachmann Locomotive.

Maybe Vic will chime in on it’s Build.

I feel very fortunate to own a few of his creations.

Dave

While it might not look the part of a logging loco, it certainly looks like it would feel right at home on the California Western Rwy… the Skunk Train

Gee, it’s brand new and already derailed. LOL

Yep that’s my bash but its not based on an HLW Big John though, its a pair of Aristo center-cab bricks w/ HLW truck sideframes grafted on, an HLW El Cheepo flatcar and the unmodified body from a busted Bachmann 2-4-2 Columbia I picked up at the Rusty Boat show, the fuel bunker is also from HLW, luckily I had the piece, I think from Ebay. It was actually a very easy bash and a great way to reuse those old broken drive Columbia’s that everyone seams to have laying around.

This was actually the second version I built, here is its smaller older brother:

This one uses a Bmann 20’ flatcar so its shorter, and I had to rework the boiler/cab area to fit. I kept the shorty as it works on the Pizza and Dave got the other one.

Funny thing this came up now, I am working on a new engine project using another pair of the Aristo bricks and for the life of me, I just couldn’t remember how I cross wired the bricks to work in unison! Finally figured it out.

Vic,

Thanks for the details…

I finally located your post:

“Strange thing to find in the Desert”

I can now tell folks the story if asked

about the Not So Yellow Submarine.

Thanks again…

Dave

Victor-

Nicely done --looks great!

Is the pulling power enough for a 3%+ grade and six ore cars (empty with simulate load covers)?

Wendell

All of my Aristo brick powered bashes will pull stumps just using just the weights in the bricks themselves.

Hi Victor:

Your bash really looks like the Bachmann ON30 Stearn Heisler loco.

I guess if Bachmann later builds that loco in Spectrum G it will be super detailed, 1:20 and very expensive.

Too bad that Bachmann would not simply use their existing Columbia and flat car molds to build a low cost model. They only need to scale down their large power trucks.

Norman

Norman your preaching to the choir here.

Wow I just went thru Dave’s photo album, I forgot how many of my bashes Dave has acquired over the years, glad to see them again.
