Hitting the road

Tomorrow (Thursday) I’m taking off on my annual Nevada camping trip. Five days of exploring old ghost towns and mines, and doing a bit of aerial photography with my rockets. I’m also planning to go through Ely, hopefully at the right time to see the Nevada Northern’s steam train running.

Wow, Ely! You sure do go a long way out of your way to satisfy your interests, that's fer sure!

Funny though, we were there last weekend, showing some Swedish visitors around the 12th century cathedral, one of the ecclesiastical wonders of the world, but I didn’t notice anything special with regard to trains, just the usual 10:22 from Cambridge to Newmarket that we came in on.

Anyhow, enjoy your trip, and if, while you are in Ely, you get a minute, give me a call and we’ll come over and take you around a bit. In fact, having come that far to see Ely we would be pretty cut up if we didn’t get to meet up with you!

See pm for my home/cell number.

Sounds like great fun Ray.
Be safe. I’m sure you will share a few pictures with us.

Sadly it seems he's gone back to sleep.

Did the Britannia 70037 survive the end of steam?

Sadly, no. Only 70000 ‘Britannia’ and 700013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’ survive.

Hi, just a quick note to say I’m back from my trip. I’ll post more info later.

Dear Mr Dunakin - I was rather hoping that you would realise that I was pulling your leg about Ely, especially so since we live less than twenty miles from the original city of that name. Sadly, it seems that my poor attempt at humour has passed you by.

Sorry 'bout 'dat, eh?

I hope that you had a good time and took many images.

Just got the film developed from my trip… 21 rolls! Now I’m sorting through them all and will eventually post some on my website.

Weird thing… on many pics, areas which should be white or near white, are almost sky-blue. The guy who processed them thinks maybe the film was heat-damaged.

During the last GR convention in Denver, I took a 2 week tour of Colorado. I must have shot close to 50 rolls of film. It took me until last summer to finally get them all developed and sorted. The digital camera had close to 700 images on it.

Someone gave me a tip awhile ago about storing film in a cooler. Seems to keep it fresher and it lasts longer.

Can’t wait to see the pix…

That works well. Double bagging the film in "ziplock bags and putting the film in the freezer extends the life almost indefinitely. I still haven't made the transition to the new fangled technology of digital photography

Ray - here's a couple of sites to lool at - I can categorically state that there is absolutely nothing like this on your side of the Great Water.

www.elycathedral.org

www.ely.org.uk

Enjoy, if you like that sort of thing, of course.

Best

Thanks Terry. That cathedral is amazing!
