This evening , I watched a TV prog about the raising of the turret of one of the two Ironclads .
Sadly , though two crewmens’ remains were found , the programme did not go into what was done with them .
So , were they given a Full Military Funeral ? If so , was it at sea , or in Arlington ?
Mike
Don’t recall the Ironclads, as they were “Targets” or “Skimmers”, but the Hunley, when raised, the crew was given full military honors, the funeral prcession in Charleston took hours, with Submarine Veterans of all wars participating.
I would guess no question, but Arlington isn’t the only place.
Locallyy, we have Tahoma National Cemetery.
Even Vietnam MIAs whose remains are found and returned get the full meal deal, and if they did not, Veterans around the country would literally be up in arms.
And quite rightly too , Dave . It is good to think that the Veterans’Associations are still respected .
The Hunley , I believe was a submarine , where was that raised? Or did they just explore it ?
Mike
No, they raised it, preserved it, removed the remains for a full funeral, and they even found the coin in the captain’s pocket with the big ding from the bullet.
He’d been shot earlier in the war, it stopped the bullet, he kept it as a lucky charm.
Didn’t help, but they found it.
They are cleaning it, sifting everything, preserving everything, figuring out how they built it, how it worked, amazing to read about.
Having been in a steel coffin under the waves, one tends to know what they’re up against.

saw the same show… yes the crew was given full military honors funerals… i believe as much as possible was recovered… and is in long term salvage/restoration… it will take years to begin to display parts of it…
the iron clads… i believe they are trying to raise parts of them when found too… but… run into same problems as with the hunley…
The turret, I beleive that Mike was talking about, was the one from the Union Ironclad “Monitor” which foundered and sank off the coast of North Carolina during a storm. There was an article about it in National Geographic some months ago. I’ll have to dig out the issue and see what it says about the remains.
Twas on the History Channel a while back too…“Raise the Monitor” …I do recall that the crewmen were given a full meal deal…But they were buried in NC I think…
The Hunley…that is in my neck of the woods…We have a State Lic. Plate for autos that bears its picture and proceeds go to the funding of the restoration…
It is a big deal here (rightly so) in SC. Thanks for the reminder Mike…And the service Vets!
Thar is a lot of hiztry down here in nuh Soufh.
