Historic train depot burns

The old Erie train depot in Salamanca, New York burned yesterday. Sadly, the building was a total loss. What a bummer.

Well, apparently it was going to be demolished anyway:

“The building, which runs parallel to Atlantic Street and was once the division headquarters to the Erie Railroad, was slated for demolition later this year, according to Salamanca Mayor Carmen Vecchiarella.”

The Seneca nation indians own it and have no use for it.

Greg

Seneca’s probably set it on fire, Bastards every one of them…

No love for the Senecas here :@ >:(

BTW that’s the Wolinak/Abenaki blood in me talking like that

Wow Sir, I guess you never heard of my Mother’s Golden Rule.

I’m not really sure your ancient animosity plays well here…

Slated for demo, happens all the time everywhere.

Sad realities.

The Senecas have destroyed most of Salamanca and its history during the last 20 years, it’s a long story 'round these parts, but overall if your from around here then you’d understand… The expectation to honor treaties their ancestors made but not accept the land deals their ancestors made are notorious…

I wasn’t trying to make it bigger, nor to change your mind, I just felt your opinion a tad extreme for here.

Have a great day.

John

Wow is right. Especially coming from someone who is trying to establish a business using this forum.

It’s sad to see a Depot burn, but like Greg said, it was slated for demolition so it would have been lost eventually.

Because of the land/lease agreements in Salamanca, if the Senecas can’t use it it goes to the crapper as nobody will invest in that town anymore. The majority of people that leave the area simply burn their house down so the seneca’s don’t get it btw. ! of my relatives were one of the 15 evicted back in 1990 losing their house/ and the investments in it

Mark’s post reminds me of a similar occurence on the WPYR .

One of the local indigenous population allegedly set fire to a large sternwheeler , part of a collection of artefacts at Carcross (I think) .

I was visiting the railway (we do travel some distances to see our trains) and asked about the remains ; it appeared that the son of the then Local Chief was denied his request for licquor , so decided to take it out on the nearest object belonging to the foreigners . More history up in smoke .

The really sad thing about these instances , and I know of many more , is that the objects of hate often bring money , visitors and jobs to the area .

Whilst it may seem demeaning to earn money from tourists because of self pride , it also shows a remarkable example of not seeing the wood for the trees .
