What this town needs is a good 24-hour a day train store! The wife went to bed early, it was warm in the garage workshop, and I was hoping to finish the clapboard and do the base coat, but I ran out of .030 wooden rods. So, we’ll pick it up tomorrow …
I did lay down a couple rows of shingles (cut out by way of a Cricut die-cutting machine) but I didn’t want to get out the pin nailer with its loud compressor that might wake up the wife.
I have been a bit under the weather the past few days but I have had a chance to do at least a little work. I finished the clapboard siding on the front, cut out the various doors, and have been installing shingle strips. Last night I layed down a basecoat on the front, and this morning I put down the crackle medium and painted the whitewash. Not sure what I will do this afternoon, although taking advantage of the 70+ degree weather and prepping the site on my layout is a likely candidate. Also want to do additional weathering and chipping (haven’t forgotten you, Devon!). Tomorrow is the BAGRS annual meeting, so I will not be working too much on this project, at least not until evening.
UPDATE: Here’s a quick first attempt at chipping and I wasn’t all that impressed. A lot of that, I suspect is my own lack of skill. I used an X-Acto knife and also tried a Dremel steel brush.
Keep working at it. It has potential. The crackle is real nice

Still not sure what happened. It was eerily quiet, and suddenly I noticed all the horses were mysteriously gone. All that could be heard was the distant sound … of a rooster.

Looks like arson to me. Better call the fire marshal and begin a full scale investigation. May go on for years.

I am kind of sad I suggested you take it outside to burn it down, It WAS a cool building , but now I guess you will have to do some crazy spray glue or something to keeep everything where it is. Congrats on what is probably a LSC first, even a modeling first, Nice job on the fire too, it burned a lot and left a good ammount towhere you still know what you are looking at!!
When you see the video you’ll understand what happened to the weinnies! And, yes, I do think it was arson. We may never know who was actually responsible but I am sure the crack team of LSC investigators will be able to come up with a fine list of suspects!
Pete, it was my intention from the very beginning to burn it down, and I did have some assistance from a special effects friend of mine to limit the burn to certain areas of the structure.
I still have to put together the photos, expenses, et al. post and edit the video, but I am very pleased with how it all turned out. I also got to observe and reflect on some things about structure fires that I assume would hold true in the 1:1 world, as well. More on all this later …
WOW. Controlling the burn to that extent might just have been as difficult as the build. I can’t believe how well the charred wood held up. You must have had a well planned method of extinguishing the flames. Getting fire results too look correct in scale isn’t easy and I think you nailed it.
Burn, baby, burn. It’s really sad to see a nice building be reduced to ashes.
I don’t think I’ve quite evolved to the point where I am ready to burn my structures down. Though I have to say it is a unique way to let people see your excellent framing
