Hiking

When im not running trains I also enjoy hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. I took a hike yesterday in the the Lusscroft Farm area of High Point State Park. Its about a mile from my house. Its a nice hike because you start at 700ft and get up to 1500ft at the top of the ridge. (elevation is nothing compared to western standards as well as NC). About 700ft

800ft

This is where they do the Maple Syrup end of feb/March

Old sled parts from the days they got ice from the ponds

Ice pond were they got ice blocks from back in the day.

Towards ridge top just under 1400ft - southern exposure

Ridge top 1400ft

Seasonal view of the valley below my house would be to the left just out of picture

Climb to top

Shawn,
Thanks for the beautiful pictures.
We thought we might get some snow Saturday, but it missed us.
Ralph

Jon i have not ried geoctching only because I dont have a GPS unit yet. Im old fashion I still like my map and compass. Orienteering I never heard of but that sounds like fun. I will have to look into that. I love just taking a map and compass and bushwack into the woods. You find neat things that way

I actually took a class in Orienteering in college. Fun stuff, in the days before “the population” had GPSs, so we did not have any in class, but I had played with them by that time as my father had access to them for work. Like Shawn (hello from the defunct GSM BTW) I prefer using USGS maps.

A lot of good hiking places here in TN, there is a trail that follows some abandoned narrow gauge right of way between Spring City and Grassy Cove (an interesting place historically and geologically, it is a LARGE sink hole) that a friend and I always think we will do “someday”. We have hiked (with property owner permission) parts of the old L&N Scottsville, KY and Hartsville, TN branches, including the wye and interchange between the two.

Why not combine to hobbies eh?
