Ah, but is 19th century technology really a 21st century solution? If so, then why not canals? Change for the sake of change, without looking at the big picture and figuring how things fit together is infinitely MORE wasteful in the long run than continuing what we are doing now until a truly better solution emerges.

Of course, we could just outlaw/ limit domestic flights, especially those with less than x number of passengers and redundant routes (thereby creating monopolies with all the unpleasant economic side effects they cause). And we could always tax the hell out of personal vehicles, like they do in some countries you’ve held up as role models. Methinks even the sheep might revolt at that though.

I give examples of countries using rail and now they are my role models?
Rail won’t help me one bit…as I live in a rural area.
I don’t sit in bumper to bumper traffic, but I do remember what it was like on Central Expressway and the LBJ in Dallas, I-75 in Detroit and various other congested hell holes they call expressways or freeways.
Air travel has become just as miserable…so I no longer fly.
I found my solution so I guess I’ll drop the subject and let all the urban dwellers sit in traffic.
Since deregulation the airlines have failed to keep their aging fleets up to date. The average age of their planes is higher than any point in our history. When they start dropping out of the sky…you won’t find me on any of the passenger lists.

Barry, just to catch you up on the Light rail in Dallas. It has come a long way, the spoke is now a reality. Attached is a picture of what is complete and running (Solid lines) and what is now under construction and future (Dotted lines). The two dotted lined in (Green & Orange) are under construction now.

Also many cities north of Dallas are now putting in Commuter rail to link them to Dart service.

We also have TRE (Trinity Rail Express) which started several years ago, very rocky start but now a success, the trains are always filled. This runs between Dallas Union Station and Fort Worth Rail Terminal next to I 30, very convenient.

Dennis,
I’m glad to see they are doing something positive in Dallas and Ft Worth. I spent many years living in both. Texans are very independent. If it can work there, it can work anywhere.

When I lived in Sandy Eggo, I used their light rail system, a lot!

I usually rode my bicycle to work at the Naval Station, from Rancho San Diego, 12.9 miles one way, with big hills. If I was feeling lazy, I’d ride the 6 miles to the trolley stop, put the bike in one of the lockers, and take the trolley to the station stop at 32nd St. From there, it was less than a quarter mile to work, a short, ten minute walk.
