Large Scale Central

Hi there!

Hi there, my names Scot
I’m 15 and I live in Scotland  I collect 1/30th scale King and Country World War Two toy soldiers, maybe some of you do too

Lately I have been very interested in making a diorama of a WW2 German triain about to embark on a journey, however I do not know the right size of trains or even where to get them from :open_mouth:

I looked on Google and I found a link to this Forum. I thought to myself ‘What better place to find information than a Forum specialising in the very subject I am enquiring about, Trains’

Can anyone help me out with what size of train scale I could use, and where to accquire some? I would be most grateful. I am mostly looking for flatbed trains that could hold a tank or other vehicles

I am also a member of the Treefrog Treasures Forum, and have been for some time, if you’re into Toy Soldiers or even other Model areas, you should come and join, we’d be happy to welcome you

Thankyou for your time, and I look forward to your imputs

A couple of weeks ago, someone over on My Large Scale had posted a picture of a German Rail Gun someone made in 1/29th scale. Jerry

Dear Mr Nisbet - welcome to the best forum of its kind on the internet. This is THE place to get some answers, although not all of them will cheer you up.

Sadly, the scale that you have chosen to model is not the accepted scale for military modelling world-wide, which is 1/35th - see the many products from Tamiya, Dragon, Hesegawa and many, many others, for instance.

Rail flats of the kind that you are looking for are made by the Belgian company of Verlinden - YOU do the search. Models of WW2 German locomotives are a lot harder to find, and the only one I can think of is the Dragon model of the WW2 BR42 Br42 in 1/32nd scale - it’s a mite pricey at around £100 or so, and was the subject of a VERY good article in ‘Military Modelling’ in late 2006. Marklin makes a ready to use rail-flat in Gauge 1 [1/32], but it is NOT a military tank-transporting heavy flat of the kind you want - it is also around £150 a pop. They also make at least four suitable locomotives in Gauge 1, but they are ‘runners’ and not ‘displayers’, and even the cheapest - the BR78, is around £800-£1000 or so. If you want a real steam-driven WW2 German loco, there is a way, but the pockets need to be very deep indeed - Aster build a Gauge 1 BR52 Kriegslok for around £4000 or so - cheaper for a kit, but not a lot.

If you buy a copy of ‘Military Modeling’ or any of the other mags that specialise in this subject you are bound to find out a lot more about your chosen area of interest.

As I said - 1/30th is NOT a common scale - and although I have been a military modeller for almost 40 years, as a member of the IPMS, I have never encountered this scale before.
The nearest scale for YOU to use will be 1/32nd for ready-made rolling stock, but there is nothing of a military type that is not a kit in either resin or plastic.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but welcome anyhow!

These are a lot of fun:

About a year and a half ago, I purchased three flat cars (2 US Army, 1 US Marine Corps) from USA Trains in Malden, Massachusetts, each of which came with one of these replica Tiger tanks (2 brown, 1 grey). The tanks operate off two AA batteries, and they are amazing powerful for their size. When my grandsons come over, they love to play with the tanks. We take them outside and race them around the house, or stick the tanks on the flat cars and see if we can get the train to stop exactly at the unloading point. Tiger tanks on a Marine Corps flat car? Not too realistic, but we don’t care at all. We’ve had hours of enjoyment from these toys, and they are the most popular cars on the railroad.

Thanks for the quick responses

The Toy Soldier company that I buy from used to model in 1/32nd before moving up to 1/30th, so 1/32nd scale items are no problem

If anyone is interestd here’s a link to the ompany’s sites.
The first one is situiated in Durham near Newcastle and is the company’s UK base:

Thanks

King and Country’s “Charge of the Light Brigade” Collection looks interesting, too.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made,
Honor the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred.

Rick Brown over on LSOL made this rail gun in 1:29 scale, I think -

WOW :-0 the rail gun is superb

and yes the K&C Chjarge of the light brigade are very good, I got to see the unveiling of them at a show in London because I was a member of the collector’s clyb, which is free and has many perks.
