It does two return trips per day (Monday-Saturday). The line has the distinction of being Peru’s oldest operating railway and the only one to cross an international border.
The Tacna station is extraordinary. With its ornate portal, it has changed little for more than a century. Inside the station there is a museum where it looks like operations of the steam era have suddenly stopped and the whole thing has been kept untouched ever since.
Everything is old or antiquated, including this railcar, the only one still in operation (it had a Volvo truck engine installed in the early 2000’s). This service can legitimately be considered scandalous. And indeed, the Tacna Regional Government - who is the owner and operator of the Tacna-Arica railroad - should be ashamed of the derelict state of its passenger service. However for railfans, this is a pure delight.
For a few kilometers, the train will run in the middle of the streets, one of the oddest, quaintest and picturesque railroad scenes in Peru.
