Large Scale Central

Here is another hobby ........... speeders!

Well having been in model traisn since being a small kid progressing my way up from N scale to G I also have for the last 8 years dabbled in 1:1 railroad speeders and belong to NARCOA ( north american railcar opperators assoc ).

http://www.narcoa.org/

for those of you who are interested might be worth a look, it too is a great hobby as you all know anything trains is a good thing, as well as running with them I also sell motorcars so if nay of you are even currious and need to purchase one I can get you into a used Canadian CN motorcar as I have many in stock as we speak, getting them into the US is no big deal so again if currious feel free to ask for info and picctures.

Well hope you all enjoy my " other crazy hobby "

I love Speeders.
Lots of abandoned track around here.
But alas, Speeders at this point are Powerball dreams.
I have been contemplating building a lightweight homemade version.
Something a couple guys can set on the rails.
Ralph

Hi Ralph

just a short note of warning … PLEASE dont set anything speeder related on any track without RR permission no matter how tempting, NARCOA works real hard to set up a repore with railways all over north america and this is the biggest taboo on the books, if you are currious check the run lists on the site and see one in action when they run close to you.

Its alot more fun when you can do it legally as it only hurts the hobby in the long run as we do not run on abandoned its all live rail ,we are escorted , insured and all have safety tests to pass before we ever hit the high iron.

thanks for your interest.

Terry

Yes speeder clubs look like fun, would love to have one but I dont know of any out here in SoCal, not as much abandoned rail route out here.

Ralph you could always try this route, the Cambodian Bamboo Railcars

I’ve enjoyed a speeder ride or two. Kind of scary on these though…

I think all of life is divided into 3 groups, kinda scary, scared to death and the rest just waiting for something good and exciting to happen.

I looked into this around here about 10 years ago. At that time, the guys were a bunch of grumpy old men and not welcoming or helpful, completely turned me off getting involved with them. Too bad, looks like fun.

Morning Bob

Its not like that anymore Im sadened to hear about your experience but Im guessing that was before the NARCOA became a larger orginization, Ive been in this for many years, you always find the odd person but in general its a fun, clean bunch of men and wives/ girlfriends, the hobby has come a long way and is run very professionally and safe.

anyone interested in purchasing cars or the hobby feel free to Email me any time, Id post pics of what I have for sale but still to this day cannot figure out how or even find a link to attach out of my files.

Terry

Hi Bob,

Did you approach them with your conversion idea of the old SCCA entry? I think, NARCOA and NASCAR are very different.

What a great idea - 180 MPH 4 inches above the rail. Turns could be a bitch though

I have 6 friends who all have motor cars (speeders) who go on several trips a years thru out both the USA and their homeland of Canada. Seems like that “hobby” has caught on quite a bit as more and more railroads are making available their track for sopme lengthy rides (hundred miles or more). My friends all enjoy it, I’ve gone on some 1 day rides while they have taken in 3 day outings. My biggest drawback to owning one myself is that I am not mechanically inclined whatsoever while they can do all their own engine & body work.

Has anyone ever converted a go-kart type vehicle to a rail speeder?

Seams like it could be a fairly straight forward conversion if one started with the kit versions of these, modify the tranny add commonication gear, maybe even some sort of body shell, just curious

well Victor I supose that anything could be made into a speeder … here is a pic of what I have left for sale
Fairmont MT 14’s ONAN engine with trans and chain drive.
not sure if the picture will come thru seems I have trouble and still dont know how to post pics.

Terry

No picture came through If I had my way I’d like to find something like this, gas powered version of the classic Velocipede

But I thought the go-kart idea would be an inexpensive way to get into this hobby, but I wasnt sure what standards needed to be applicable to meet the RRs safety reqts

Victor

I have a Sheffield # 1 Velocipede for sale also, mint condition all wood redone, If you could figure out how to post pics here Id show you or PM me and Ill send pics.

the one in your pic is a fellow in eastern Canada who has it.

Terry

Here is a link to a speeder site where I have pics of the Velocipede and the speeders I have for sale … hope this helps till I can figure out how to post pics, I wish they would change this to just getting them out of your putter instead of going thru a 3rd part pic hosting site.
