Large Scale Central

Help! LGB 2-4-0 ideas.

I recently acquired one of these. Its is like brand new. Part of me wants to leave it exactly as is and just add my electronics. Part of me wants to weather it a bit and call it good. Part of me want to bash it into either a 2-4-0 but more of an earlier design. And part of me wants to make it a 0-4-0 yard switcher.

No matter what I do it will have working front and rear couplers that are a notched design (either a modified Kadee or one from Precision Scale Company) so that it can pull both knuckle coupler equipped cars and link and pin cars.

What do people think I should do with it?

That’s called a Janney Coupler

That’s the beast. Thanks John. Hopefully I can figure out how to modify a Kadee. It won’t be as simple as cutting a notch in it. Need to figure out how to attach a tube of some sort for the pin. But I can always make a Link and Pin coupler pocket mounted knuckle coupler I suppose. But this looks more fun if I can solve the problem.

More than likely I will keep it pretty much as is with coupler mods so it will pull both types of cars. I have enough projects I don’t need to start another and this is a great working loco. But with that said an 0-4-0 camel back would be fun.

An idea;

Minus the pilot truck, house top.

John,

Something very similar to that is in my bucket already probably using one of my many Bachmann 10 wheelers. Thats more aggressive of a project than I want to do with this loco. Its to nice to cut up that much. One of the reasons not to do a camel back.

Speaking of camelbacks, their look is interesting and appealing; but the idea of being crew on one is not appealing, I prefer to be close enough to communicate with my partner.

But, if there were the models & I had the health and money, a small stable of G scale camelbacks would be nice.

Am currently working on 2 IHC 2-6-0 camelbacks in HO scale fro one of my freelance lines.

–> Someone has put together an album of over 300 camelbacks, https://sites.google.com/site/camelbacksteamlocomotives/

–> This site has several inspection steamers scattered about, dig this New Haven 4-4-0’s candy-cane striped railings, http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/nynh1.jpg

The logical no-nonsense answer is, you should do something you have the health and time to do.

(said mostly because is currently big issue with me)

The fun answers are;

A radical kitbash to this SP 2-4-2T with its angled cab corners, http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/sp1004s.jpg

An attractive 1880s 2-4-0, http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/lirr19thcentury/LIRR%20Early%20Engines/NEW%20YORK%20&%20SEA%20BEACH%20RR-2-4-0%20No.2-BAY%20RIDGE%20-%20c.%201887.jpg

Another option, turn it in to an 0-4-2T or 0-4-4T, some samples here, http://narrowmind.railfan.net/index.html#042T

Such as this with a skinnier boiler and one-truck tender, http://www.trainsarefun.com/rvrr/images/sirt10_2-4-4-4TJosephASmithcollection.jpg

Or, you could go all Mason-Bogie on us, http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/lirr%20engines/tank-forney/LIRR%202-4-6T%20Mason%20Bogie%20at%20Engine%20House%20-%201890%20(Huneke).jpg

Ya know, could just swap pilot truck to other end and have something like this, http://narrowmind.railfan.net/042-Rogers114.jpg

anyone for a “Noiseless street motor” 0-4-2?
http://narrowmind.railfan.net/042T_Porter104.jpg

or if you have some extra SP decals, a diamond stack, and a trolley roof, http://narrowmind.railfan.net/042TdummySP.jpg

Forrest as you have shown there are so many appealing little idea for a bash project. I like the 0-4-2 thats kinda cool. I don’t know. I have so many ideas and so many unfinished project but it could be made into a cool loco. But its so nice the way it is.

Are they done yet?

John;

Until I saw the small stabilizer wheels on either side of that drive wheel, I was at a loss as to why the locomotive didn’t do a nose or tail dive. The 0-4-0st I ran shook bad enough, Don’t want to imagine how badly that beastie shimmied!

Those are just the training wheels …

I will never sell my soul to the devil. I can be led far astray, I can even be persuaded to model a diesel, but my railroad does not need female implements of pleasure running around on its rails. Besides I can’t afford it. Building a model only to wreck it is to expensive for me.

A train?

Jerry Ranger of Facebook’s g scale garden railways kit bashed 1 into a HLW 4-4-0 and said the drivers are only 3 mm smaller than, came out nice looking, I took a 2010 and added a front pilot to it for may logging engine, Bill

That’s perfect John. This is what I more or less had visioned when I said an older 2-4-0 I really like that and am leaning toward that or a 0-4-0 in the same style. But I like that a lot. I even like that weird passenger car its pulling. However I also have an LGB Stanz that I could use for a loco like that. Oh the choices lol
