Help Hornets! the digging kind. Annihalation desired

Ho boy I came out this morning to find a bunch of the little bastards starting to burrow in the front yard. I didnt see any yesterday but there ARE today. I used the hose on a timer to flood the hole for over an hour and tommorow morning I will pile the hole with Diatematious Earth. If that doesn’t do the trick I will cover the burrow in a t-shirt saturated in hornet killer.

Any other suggestions short of calling an exterminator? Keep in mind I am in the city so no gasoline or kerosine and matches …much as that might appeal me personally …it would scare the neighbors. I hate hornets and wasps

There’s a hornet and wasp spray that’s very effective, and shoots from a good distance so you don’t have to get too close. Drops 'em dead in their tracks.

I have two cans of the stuff. One I was going to use to cover the burrow with an insecticide soaked t-shirt. Spraying the opening may kill alot of them but probably not all of the little monsters.

They torment my dog. I have several traps around the yard and hung another over the burrow. That usually keeps them in line. This is the first time they’ve picked my yard for a burrow and I want it to be the last.

Spectracide >Commercial< Wasp and Hornet Spray.

I think sprays won’t do for burrows, flooding with water helps, I think you need one of those “bombs” that emit poison gas… of course I don’t think you can get them anymore.

We have this issue in San Diego, not many people realize that they will dig a nest.

Another thing that works is Sevin in a powder form. Spread around the entrance, those entering take it inside and get the rest. Not as fast as the spray, but it;ll get rid of them.

I used one of those squeeze bottle chalk line containers, filled with Sevin, that way you won’t have to get too close.

The Commercial Spectracide spray works good.

Note: Wasps and hornets “Hole up” at night and get a bit lazy in the cold/cool of the night. The best time to attack is early morning / dawn, before they become active and they are all in the hole.

If you just like to be mean to them, Park a running rotary lawn mower over the hole, it really pi…sses them off, only to fly out of the hole and into a whirling blade. Won’t get them all, but it gets the stupid ones for a while.

I’ll have to remember that one!..

There are many ways to deal with this:

Place a @6" chunk of dry ice over hole, and then an a bucket over that.

Cover hole with a fly zapper. (plugged in).

I like the lawn mower idea. Please Let us know what works.

Just wait until full dark and pour about a coffee can of gasoline down the hole and cover with dirt. End of problem

I read something similar, only using a large shop vac, makes me regret giving my mower to my neighbor after we ditched the lawn.

Poured a small mountain of Diatomatious Earth over the hole this morning, some say it works other it doesn’t …worse comes to worse I may just call the exterminator to bomb them.

Local Home Despot site says they have the Sevin powered killer but my experience is that anything that actually works has been banned for use in California.

Yeah they can really suck the fun out of doing somethings, like I said above… seams like anything that actually works has been banned here, I used to be able to get a termite control product called Term-out which was always 100% effective, now I cannot find it anywhere, replaced by a “friendlier” mint oil based product, grrr.

I dont want “minty fresh” termites I want D E A D termites, and thats how I want these Yellow Jackets

D as in DEAD

E ans in EXTERMINATED

A as in ALL OF THEM

D as in DEAD just to make sure they stay dead

Whatever works.

Dawn works on stink bugs, not quick, but it works…

I had good luck with the wasp/hornet spray can. Seemed to get them all.

Hi Vic, I have had limited success with this

You spray it down the hole and it foams up to fill the cavity. You might have to empty the can. Remember to watch out for another entrance /exit.

Greatest topic yet.
