I want to build an electromagnet I can place between the rails that I can turn on and off with a switch to activate the whistle switch in my tender. Any solutions?
Encase an old Lionel uncoupling track magnet in epoxy (or some other means of weatherization)?
How about a Kadee, under-track, HO electromagnet. http://www.kadee.com/htmbord/page309.htm
Sometimes, having a period is not good. Try the link now.

I have a bunch of electronic stuff here I thought I could use to build an electromagnet with.
As a kid I would do the wire around a nail trick but it would quickly run the battery down, and on 120 VAC, fergetaboutit.
Had a really strong one out of an old auto clock. The clock would wind itself up by switching the magnet on and off moving an iron lever. I ran it on a 6v transformer from an old slot car toy.
