Large Scale Central

Help "bashing" an American, fenders, etc

It came UPS yesterday, my first motive power a Bachman 4-4-0 unlettered, all black. There was a broken handrail post on the boiler and the finial on the sand dome was AWOL as were any ornaments for on the pilot (bases with holes, but no little brass thingies).

I plan to paint it, change the smokestack, convert the fuel load to wood (anyone want to trade?), remove the air pump and lines, replace the missing parts, etc.

What I am hoping someone can help me with is building fenders for the drivers. Where could I find a cast ornament for between the drivers and how would I best attach and build the fenders themselves?

The fenders are best built from brass strip, screwed to the frame.

The ornament in the center typically existed only on 4-4-0s whose wheels were large enough to where they almost touched. (typically standard gauge 4-4-0s.) In the case of the Bachmann 4-4-0, there’s too much space between the drivers for such an ornament, so I wouldn’t worry about it. The fenders do add a nice touch of class, though.

Thanks Kevin. Very nicely done!

Do you have any other detail pics of your American I can see, to be able to “steal” more ideas? I’m going to want to drive him around for a bit before I “Pimp My Loccie”.

Here’s a link with some more photos.

I chronicled the rebuilding/repainting in my “Garden Railways Basics” column in GR about a year ago. It was a 4-part series, though I don’t recall offhand which issues they ran in.

WoW!

Excellent videos and niiiice layout, Kevin. I read that you edited in the sound for both the Shay and #5, do you have sound in the 4-4-0?

I’ll be wanting to add sound at some point and am interested in the quality vs. cost of what is available.

Progress on my first modeling experience. This is my Bachman 4-4-0. It was received painted black.

A small 12# artillery battery. Two guns are from Ozark and a transfer piece from Kaskaskia Valley RWY. The limber will have to do triple duty until more are build in my shop. The original LGB flatcar had the trucks modified, a new wooden deck installed, painted and my first attempt at weathering and link & pin couplers added.

Nice job.
I like the windows.
