I’d like to introduce myself. I am Ralph Berg. New member from the foothills of North Carolina. I just broke ground a few weeks ago on my Garden Railroad, The Sunnyview Line. I have around 400 feet of track to lay, so I will be very busy for a long time. This is my first garden railroad. I am “floating” my track. Due to a limited budget I will be using track power for now. Hopefully in a few years I will be in a position to convert to RC/Battery power.
Ralph
Welcome Ralph! look around, ask questions, and show off your stuff!
Hey Ralph!
Cale here from Spartanburg SC! Welcome in! Good luck with the layout, please keep us posted!
oh, I gotta ask, whatcha planning on modeling?
Welcome Ralph
Just so you know there is nothing wrong with track power. I use it and have good luck with it. But then again I am lazy and just like to sit and watch the trains go round.
Get a drywall sander with a pole and scotchbrite pads…with 400 feet of mainline and track power you’re gonna need it.
Welcome Ralph…
Was thinking this morning…you may be the nearest GRR to me here on LSC!

der ya go as Mikey would say, here’s how to clean your track!!! Watch video till the end the part you want to see is at the end
I have a dry wall sander as well as a LGB track loco. I think the loco dose a better jop. I use the sander just for spot areas that might need it.

Probably so. Depending on which side of Spartanburg you live, I’m probably 30-40 minutes away. I live a couple minutes off Hwy 9 just before you get to Lake Lure.
We also have another common interest. Music. I have a little side business-Party DJ. I call it a business but I will probably not live long enough to make back the money I have invested in Audio equipment!
Now if I can just convince my better half there is a way to make money off the Garden Railroad I’ll be set!
My first track that I hope to complete this season should only be around 100 feet. Hopefully I can afford to switch to RC/Battery power by the time I start work on phase 2.

Welcome Ralph…
Well, I DJ on the air…but never a party, sounds fun though!
Here is how I am laying my track…it has worked really-really well for me so far!

Oh, sorry.
My first loop will have tight radius curves. I will be using a Bachmann 4-6-0, Buddy L 2-6-2 and the Hartland Mack. I’m modeling the fifties and hope to use some larger Diesels in phase 2.
Ralph
Greetings Ralph, and welcome aboard!
I have a Buddy L too, it’s what got me started in outdoor railroading. I bought it in December of 2005, broke ground on the layout right after New Year’s 2006, still working on getting the last of the track down. Will be about 300 feet of track when it’s complete. This last stretch requires the construction of several (more) bridges and trestles, plus a lot fiddly little things that are eating up a lot of time.
I can see I chose the right community to join. You are a friendly bunch of folks!
Ralph
Welcome aboard, Ralph!
You have the mid-watch. Coffee’s up, down in the Goat Locker.
With 400 ft of track, you can build quite a railroad! How many switches (turnouts) do you have?
I have only three switches and need three more for phase I. I got a nice deal on 8 cases of 12inch sectional track a few years ago. So I have the track but will be installing it over a long period of time as I acquire the other things I need. I have put down about 40 feet of track in the last two weeks. And it looks like I have another hundred feet or so to go for phase I. I have several buildings completed and several more in various stages of completion.
