Large Scale Central

Hello there

I’ve been lurking around here for a while but figured it was time to say hello. I am a fellow train addict, located in southern California. I currently have a layout in the backyard that I have been working on for a year or two with 2 battery powered LGB moguls and some rolling stock. Not a whole lot in the way of details yet but after I finish expanding and re configuring my track I will work on that.

There are so many aspects of this hobby I want to learn and do it seems overwhelming at times but I get to it little by little. If only I could get my wife to do the yard work so I could focus more on the train . . ah well. I may have some questions on things that I haven’t tried yet, like scratch building, making a mountain with cement (or whatever else works for that) and weathering.

I know we all like pictures, I have a few on my website here- http://www.satchmosden.com/gardenrr.html

I just won a GoPro at the company Christmas party raffle so I am looking forward to making some videos.

Welcome David. You will learn a lot from the fine folks here. And maybe teach us some.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Welcome Dave.

Welcome! What part of So Cal are you in? Im in the SFV. Im fairly new here as well, but have picked up lots of great advice here. 20 years ago I had a plan for a small railroad in the backyard. Just before I broke ground, my wife decided we should sell the house and move to bigger digs. Unfortunately, this house is not that conducive for a garden railroad. This past summer, I converted a barren patch of dirt into a patio and was able to lay track around it. I added a small concrete mountain (thanks to You Tube) and will work on some buildings (facades) over the cold So Cal winter. I converted to RC/battery using Railboss with mylococound as well.I was able to draw out a plan for Phase 2, but have yet to submit the plans to the Office of Finance and Budgeting…Im going to have to butter up the commissioner to get her to approve it.

You can see the lower portion of my concrete mountain in the background, I hope to finish the upper portion and the waterfall soon.

Good luck, keep posting those pictures

Bob I am in Covina. Is there a particular type of concrete that works best for mountains? I have some that I used on cinder blocks for a tunnel but I think it is quick dry, I found it hard to work with. But then again that was my first time using concrete . .

Welcome Aboard David,

Don’t mind that noise, its just the pump keeping this vessel afloat.

Welcome. Later RJD

Welcome from jolly New England!

David - My first try I used Type S Mortar as that is what I had around. I didnt care for it. I rewatched the video and “Sand and Topping Mix” was recommended. I got a bag at Lowes and started playing with the mix. Lots of trial and error but I think I finally figured out something that works.
